Poll question: WASD vs. STF
I haven't realy used STF since I was playing the original tribes on a Gateway 2000 (56k). I have heard that a lot of people still use the STF keyboard layout because it gives you a larger selection of keys. What do you use?

1. WASD
I used to use the arrow keys and assigned jump/run/crouch commands to CTRL, 0 on the number pad, RSHIFT, etc. This was before I switched over to the more commonly used WASD setup at least a couple years ago. I've actually never heard of the STF setup. It seems like it may give you more options but it'll crush your pinky finger. Ouch. :)

3. STF?
I knew a guy that swore by JKOL--and he inverted his mouse!

Completely crazy. But it worked for him.

I use ESDF because you have that thingy on the F key to let you know where you are. It comes in useful to find your place after gesturing at your(my) monitor and shouting "Fucking Bullshit" when some newb gets lucky. :-)

Whatever works.

4. SDF is superior ASD for three reasons
Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 12:36 PM by DS1
SDF e = up s = left f = right d = down
ASD a = left w = up d = right

SDF gives you more available keys in the immediate area of the motion keys, for example I always bind Q and W for leaning left and right respectively, r = reload shift = walk/run toggle z= major rail/sniper weapns, v = shotgun type/melee weapon, and so on

SDF Also has the advantage of having the groove on the F key, so if you lose your spot for whatever reason ( heavy intense fighting, cat jumps in way, earthquake, whatever ) you can find it that much quicker.

SDF Also has the advantage of being where your hand naturally lays when you lay it on your kboard. try it with your eyes closed.

Yes, SDF requires some reprogramming from game default, but everyone should find their own style, as demonstrated above, for games anyway, and the default keys are typically useless. 1, 2, 3, 4, -> for increasing weapon power is stupid, and inefficient.
