My dog incessantly drools in the presence of food
Do you suppose it could be low vitamin D? Normally I'd be skeptical, but he also seems to want me to scratch his butt all the time. I read on the internet that obsessive butt scratching seeking behavior is related to low vitamin D too. Apparently every disease known to caninekind is due to low vitamin D. Who knew? Fortunately, there's a wealth of companies, I mean nonprofit groups, selling books, DVDs, supplements and home testing kits to make sure my dog's vitamin D levels never fall below 400 or 500 times the recommended daily allowance.

5. No, I haven't seen any pet related vitamin D woo... yet
I was riffing on the onslaught of Vitamin D posts elsewhere. Vitamin D is the new Vitamin C I guess, except Vitamin D apparently cures more things than Vitamin C.

10. A lack of vitamin D also leads to learning difficulties.
That's probably why your dog can't read.

4. It's difficult for them to get enough vitamin D
But since vitamin D is created in the body by exposure to sunlight, have you considered the homeopathic approach of locking him in a dark room?

8. That's not funny. I have a serious vitamin D deficiency.
In fact, I'm so low on D that when I recently tried to watch a movie from my collection, I found that my cabinet was full of V's.

13. Actually, my other collection was even older than that
I say "was," because the whole collection vanished after I took some beta-blockers.

12. LMAO
Love the comment about the "non-profit" group selling the kits. For a small fee, of course, merely to support the grassroots, of course!

And they are buying it, hook, line, and sinker. Is vitamin D an important nutrient? You bet it is! But this latest fad of blaming every malady known to humankind on insufficient D is getting WAY out of hand.

You'd better get yourself some sun, son.

I see people advocating that people sit out in the noonday sun because after all it's the dangerous chemicals in sunscreen that cause skin cancer . Can't be the natural sun oh no...:eyes:

21. Yeah. That figures
You know, one of the things I took away from basic biology was the fact of how everytime sunlight hits DNA it damages it, and DNA has to self-repair. I think its an amazing function but anybody who has ever studied this factoid should be aware of the stupidity of the "base tan" mythology. Just makes me shake my head.

22. It's amazing
I think we've witnessed the birth of a whole new branch of altmed woo right here on DU. A couple of studies come out indicating that people might not be getting adequate Vitamin D, and almost immediately Big CAM spins into action telling us low Vitamin D levels are responsible for everything from foot fungus to right wing Republicans. But don't worry, because Big CAM has the cure; or rather, do worry, and spend, spend, spend!
