Health really is the "Chicken Little" forum...
I post this wonderful amazing story about a new gene therapy treatment thats actually given sight to people who were legally blind..
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...
and it gets half the recs and half the views of another thread that talks about the evil of plastic bottles.....
I don't think most of the woos in that group are at all interested in true scientifc breakthroughs only the "we are gonna die" type thing....:banghead:

1. No, they're Luddites
who are hell bent on proving everything around us brought to us by evil corporations is killing us slowly and grotesquely, especially things that are designed to help us live longer and healthier lives.

They're the people who think we'd all be happier if we adopted the Amish lifestyle, went completely without real health care, and died at 45 from preventable and treatable illnesses, plus overwork and childbirth for women.

3. I never understood why everybody thought the Amish were great.
I mean, they're so cruel to each other, and especially their kids. They fucking beat their children. I just can't respect anybody who beats his kids. And you have to conform to the ridiculously strict code of behavior. They'll kick you out of your home if they don't like your behavior. And they're terrible neighbors - there's no restriction against using your neighbor's phone. They often keep modern conveniences just off their property, or hidden in the barn. And yet they pretend to be so pious. I don't understand how they get away with the stuff they do, child abuse and harassment of those who don't conform. The cops don't bother them.

4. They don't all beat the kids
and they mostly do use sustainable farming methods using animal power rather than oil and chemicals. There is a bit to admire about them.

However, it's a tough way to live, especially for women, and Luddites who idealize their way of life would never choose to live it once they reach the age of 25.

2. I only visit there from time to time to see what the latest outrage is
and to admire the rhetorical styles of certain skeptical posters.

5. There is a certain attitude on the forum that ANYTHING associated with conventional medicine is bad
Even when doctors recommend nutritional treatments (e.g. folic acid to prevent certain birth defects) this gets ignored or rejected and 'it's illegal to take vitamins!!!'

There is a thread on GD right now, about people being required to pay upfront for lifesaving cancer treatments at certain hospitals, and it received at least one comment about how useless chemo and conventional medicine are!

woos never hate something just to hate it? "Jews are infiltrating ESPN, BUY MY BOOK FOR THE WHOLE STORY," "ALLOPATHIC MEDICINE IS A LIE, PLEASE PURCHASE MY EXTRACT OF STEAMED POMEGRANATE IN ITS PLACE"

It's never "I say, that cancer treatment doesn't work. I should inform people of this"
