Did you know that the acronym ROY G BIV....
Stands for the order of colors in the chakra? Apparantly thats a knowledge prerequisite for getting a massage therapy license.
Funny my physics professors never mentioned that..They babbled on about something about the light spectrum....Weird that they missed that one.

:eyes:
(FYI= Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet)
I swear this chakra nonsense is starting to irritate me more than almost any other woo on this site.:grr:

1. It's interesting I think to observe the various ways people use woo in their life
There's the true believers who really think that, for instance, that they have these chakras, energy centers in their body and that illness and disease can be explained by their energy centers becoming misaligned. And then there's the ones who use the idea as a sort of folk psychology but don't necessarily believe in the physical existence of chakras. Another example I can think of where there's a similar distinction seems to be people who use tarot cards. Some people believe that tarot cards really do predict future events in their lives while others use them as a type of thematic apperception test (itself based on outmoded Freudian principles).

2. One of those interesting things...
"Indigo" isn't even really a color. Wasn't it Newton who wanted desperately for there to be 7 colors in the spectrum so it would match up with the 7 notes in an octave?

Whenever I see the word "chakra" I think of Chaka Khan, and the song of the same name. Being a child of the 80s, that alleviates some of the stress. :)

4. My pleasure.
Chaka Khan - I Feel For You

Chaka, Chaka, Chaka
Chaka Khan
Chaka Khan
Chaka Khan
Chaka Khan

Chaka Khan
Let me rock you
Let me rock you
Chaka Khan
Let me rock you
That's all I wanna do
Chaka Khan
Let me rock you
Let me rock you
Chaka Khan
Let me rock you
'Cause I feel for you
Chaka Khan
Won't you tell me
What you wanna do
Do you feel for me
The way I feel for you
Chaka Khan
Let me tell you what I wanna do
I wanna love you
Wanna hug you
Wanna squeeze you too
Let me take you in my arms
Let me fill you with my charms
Chaka
'Cause you know that I'm the one
To keep you warm, Chaka
I'll make it more than just a physical dream
I wanna rock you, Chaka, baby
'Cuz you make me wanna scream
Let me rock you
Rock you

Baby, baby when I look at you
I get a warm feelin' inside
There's something 'bout the things you do
That keeps me satisfied

I wouldn't lie to you, baby
It's mainly a physical thing
This feeling that I got for you, baby
Makes me wanna sing

I feel for you
I think I love you
I feel for you
I think I love you

Chaka Khan,
Let me rock you
Let me rock you
Chaka Khan
Let me rock you
That's all I wanna do
Chaka Khan, let me rock you
Let me rock you, Chaka Khan
Let me rock you
'Cause I feel for you
Feel for you

Baby, baby when I lay with you
There's no place I'd rather be
Can't believe, can't believe it's true
The things that you do to me

I wouldn't lie to you, baby
I'm physically attracted to you
This feeling that I got for you, baby
There's nothing that I wouldn't do

I feel for you
I think I love you
I feel for you
I think I love you

I feel for you
I think I love you
I feel for you
I,I, I think I love you

Chaka Khan
Let me rock you
Let me rock you
Chaka Khan
Let me rock you
That's all I wanna do
Chaka Khan
Let me rock you
Let me rock you
Chaka Khan
Let me rock you
'Cause I feel for you
Chaka Khan
Feel for you

I feel it too
(Feel for you)
I, I feel for you
(Feel for you)

I feel for you
'Cause I love you

8. I thought the octave thing was later and with chemistry - and that Newton did that
to avoid the devil-sounding six. Or something.

I do know that the designation is arbitrary, though, so anyone who speaks of distinct colours is full of shit.

10. Did I just see a woo boasting about his dick in that thread?
That's a first! Normally they keep the dick-waving on a metaphorical level.

6. Well, the chakra people are onto something at
the emotional level. When we're in love, we don't feel it in our olfactory processors or the pleasure centers of our brain, we feel it in our hearts and guts. And lower. When we're uneasy about something, it goes right to the gut.

That's all the chakra stuff is about, displaced emotional sensation. It might all be happening in our heads, but it still produces sensation and some effect on the body in terms of increased GI secretions or decreased blood flow to certain areas.

It's one of the less harmful concepts, but quacks who go on and on about it for hours are beyond tiresome.

7. I learned it as 'Richard Of York Gained Battles In Vain"..
but just as the order of colours in the rainbow - I'd never heard of a chakra until I joined DU!

12. I have a friend who is a massage therapist. I don't think there is
Edited on Thu Feb-07-08 10:08 AM by WakingLife
a national exam but he needed to be licensed by the state we are in (Ohio). I don't think he learned anything about Chakras but I could be wrong.

Massage therapy is a legit practice in my opinion. QuackWatch seems to agree http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/massage.html. The title of the article is Massage Therapy: Riddled with Quackery but it says that the core practice of massage is a legit treatment just that it is often surrounded by/coupled with quack type stuff. That was certainly true of my friend's school. It had a reflexology course. I didn't know it while he was going there. I remember a couple of times telling him about this ridiculous thing called reflexology that I had seen on Penn & Teller's Bullshit and on a podcast. I didn't find out until later that his school was teaching that and that (even worse) the place he works at after graduation offers it. Ooops. No wonder he seemed slightly offended

Edit: oh yeah oh yeah... and they do craniosacral therapy too which is manipulating the bones of the skull (which of course is only one bone to begin with). He had to take anatomy to pass his exam so he has to know that one is bullshit. I tend not to ask him about it but I just might have to ask if he had to learn about Chakras.
