Has anyone ever had bad luck as the result of a broken mirror?
I've never been quite that superstitious, but we had a really bad windstorm here this week and one of the things destroyed by it was a mirror that had been sitting on our front porch (don't ask).

I don't really subscribe to the idea that a broken mirror equals seven years bad luck, but...it doesn't, right?

1. Nah. But it's easy to see how the superstition developed.
BREAKING A MIRROR

This will bring you 7 years of bad luck or might cause the death of someone in the family. If a mirror is broken, remove it from the house and, if possible, bury it in the ground (to counteract the evil consequences).

Origin: Before the invention of mirrors, man gazed at his reflection, his "other self," in pools, ponds, and lakes. If the image was distorted, it was a mark of impending disaster. The "unbreakable" metal mirrors of the early Egyptians and Greeks were valued items because of their magical properties. After glass mirrors were introduced, it was the Romans who tagged the broken mirror a sign of bad luck. The length of the prescribed misfortune, 7 years, came from the Roman belief that man's body was physically rejuvenated every 7 years, and he became, in effect, a new man.

3. No, I've never seen that superstition come true.
I"m sure that it's no different than breaking any other glass object.

5. Although, I *do* try not to walk under ladders.
That one actually made sense to me; something could easily fall on you when you do that.

6. I had a friend who didn't want to hear my premonitions.
He was afraid that if I spoke of them out loud, they'd come true. It came true anyway. And it was horrible.

7. What?
No offense, but what does your comment have to do with mirrors, bad luck, or superstitions about mirrors and bad luck?

10. He thought it was bad luck for the thoughts to be said aloud. He was
superstitious that way, but not about mirrors, etc.

Sorry if my meaning was unclear.

8. Nah...
I break things all the time including mirrors. I don't find a connection between those incidents and bad things that happen to me. I also have a black cat and if a black cat crossing your path brings bad luck, I'm doomed because kitty crosses my path all the time. It's how he plays with me. There are so many other things too that are only coincidence, really.

I broke a mirror when I was packing to move here. That was three years ago. It certainly seems that I have had more *bad luck* than average, more than one might expect. No end in sight either. Four more years? agk

going to bring me bad luck. Of course, I looked for bad luck and it seemed to find me.

I think that our beliefs may be what actually give credence to these superstitions. However, I find it hard to shake the beliefs.

13. I broke my great-grandmother's mirror
but didn't have seven years bad luck. In fact, it happened at a time of great spiritual growth for me.

14. No....But
Here's an interesting thought. What if, according to the universal law of attraction, a person put so much bad luck thought energy into it that some bad luck did manifest as a result?

:)
