Great Achievements - Small Steps
Today is the most important day in your quest to achieve your goal. While
there are days when huge steps are realized they are almost always the
result of a series of small steps being taken. And today, as everyday, is
a day in which you can take another small steps towards your dream.
The most important thing you can do is to create habits that will
automatically take you where you want to go. Habits are nothing but small
things that are done so often that they become automatic. They are done
without effort. So today create or reinforce a good habit. When you do
you will guarantee great achievements, one small step at a time.

When No One's Looking
The real test of character isn't what you do when you're in the spotlight
or when the pressure's on. It's not what you do when you think you can get
away with it. It's not even doing what's required of you. The real test of
character is what you do when no one is looking and when it seems that it
really won't matter. It does matter.
In 1963 a young entertainer, a comedian, was breaking into show business.
As young entertainers are likely to do this one went on the road working in
small clubs for small audiences making small amounts of money. One night in
particular it was very late and the crowd, described as mostly prostitutes
and their customers, was very small. It would have been a perfect time to
not go on or to give a half-hearted performance. But that's not how this
entertainer worked.
It was tough for anyone trying to break into show business. For this
entertainer it was particularly tough. There were no role models for a
young woman who told jokes about her family and made fun of her husband.
All she could do was to do her best every time she took the stage even
when no one else really cared.
I turned out that there was another comedian there that night. Although
calling him just a comedian is an understatement. He was a movie star,
a star of stage, radio and TV, in fact he was as big of a star as one
could hope to be. That night Bob Hope saw something in that young comedian,
her comedic ability, her personal tenacity, and her willingness to do the
right thing even when no one was paying attention, which led him to give
his support to the young Phyllis Diller.
Doing the right thing is always the right thing to do.
