August 2006 - Light and Prayer Thread

I have been going back and forth in my mind about what to post and decided with the very first option. I know, that many in this forum are trying to bring about positive change for the benefit of all sentient beings, and I wanted to post something that could have the potential of just doing that - assisting in what everyone else is already doing.

From the book "Awakening the Buddha Within", by Lama Surya Das:

Buddhists believe that the sacred energy, blessings, and wisdom released through this chant, combined with focused attention, is of benefit in subtle ways to all beings seen and unseen. The efficacy of prayers depends as much or more on the concentration and intention of the practitioner as upon the prayer itself.

Sometimes in Tibetan monasteries if someone is ill, monks will chant this sutra all day long; witnessing this, I perceived an almost palpable energy field around these chanting monks.

If you chant outside in nature, or in your backyard, remember that your Vrja (enlightened) speech is informing and spreading the Dharma to everything out there -people and pets as well as crickets, fireflies, beetles, mosquitos, wild animals, and even ticks and fleas. Dharma energy that blesses and edifies the land and everything on it is generously shared. Lamas say that wherever this sutra is recited, chanted, studied, copied, or taught, the teachings of enlightenment will be established and eventually flourish. So we do our part daily by chanting the Heart Sutra.

The teachings of sunyata about the true nature of reality are at the heart of the Mahayana Buddhism, the Great Middle Way. These teachings are explained in one hundred thousand verses known as the Prajna Paramita Sutras, which translates as the Scriptures of Transcendental Wisdom.

(condensed)

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, practicing deep prajna
paramita

Clearly saw that all five skandhas are empty, transforming all
suffering and distress.

Form is no other than emptiness, emptiness no other than form;
Form is exactly emptiness, emptiness exactly form;

sensation thought, impulse, consciousness are also like this.

All things are marked by emptiness - not born,
not destroyed;

not stained, not pure, without gain, without loss.

Therefore, in emptiness there is no form, no sensation,

thought, impulse, consciousness;
no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind;
no color, sound, smell, taste, touch, object of thought;
no realm of sight to no realm of thought;
no ignorance and also no ending of ignorance
to no old age and death and also no ending of old age and death;
no suffering, also no source of suffering, no annihilation, no
path;

no wisdom, also no attainment. Having nothing to attain,
Bodhisattvas live prajna paramita
with no hindrance in the mind. No hindrance, thus no fear.
Far beyond delusive thinking, they attain complete Nirvana.

All Buddhas past, present, and future live prajna paramita
and thus attain perfect awakened enlightenment.
Therefore know that prajna paramita is
the great mantra, the wisdom mantra,
the unsurpassed mantra, the supreme mantra,
which completely removes all suffering.
This is truth, not deception.
Therefore, set forth the prajna paramita mantra,
set forth this mantra and say:

Gate gate, paragate, parasamgate, Bodhi Svaha

As a lead prayer/chant/thought/intent - may this sutra bring about the results and wishes that will be asked.

Explanation of terms
emptiness (Skt: shunyata)
The absence of all false ideas about how things exist; specifically, the lack of the apparent independent, self-existence of phenomena. Sometimes translated as “voidness.”

Avalokiteshvara (Skt; Tib: Chenrezig)
The buddha of compassion. A male meditational deity embodying fully enlightened compassion.

bodhisattva (Skt)
Someone whose spiritual practice is directed toward the achievement of enlightenment. One who possesses the compassionate motivation of bodhicitta.

skandha (Skt)
The five psychophysical constituents that make up a sentient being: form, feeling, discriminative awareness, conditioning (compositional) factors and consciousness.

six perfections (Skt: paramita)
Charity, morality, patience, enthusiastic perseverance, concentration and wisdom. See also Paramitayana.

Paramitayana (Skt)
The Perfection Vehicle; the first of the two Mahayana paths. This is the gradual path to enlightenment traversed by bodhisattvas practicing the six perfections (charity, morality, patience, enthusiastic perseverance, concentration, and wisdom) through the ten bodhisattva levels (bhumi) over countless eons of rebirth in samsara for the benefit of all sentient beings. Also also called Sutrayana or Bodhisattvayana. Cf. Vajrayana.

Prajñaparamita (Skt)
The perfection of wisdom. The Prajñaparamita sutras are the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha in which the wisdom of emptiness and the path of the bodhisattva are set forth. The basis of Nagarjuna's philosophy.

working graveyards in a call center. It's a new client and most of us are new. The supervisor and team lead have been at the company for awhile and aren't treating us very nice. I would probably quit if they put me on another shift with the same client, because it's back to back calls. But graveyards is tolerable if the people they put in charge would stop acting like idiots. Thanks for asking for harmony around me. I'm trying to do encase the whole place in light before I get there every night, but it doesn't seem to be working.

40. I have no idea if this could help. But...

-- the greatest lesson I ever learned, the one I was always trying to learn, but just couldn't get, I learned quite accidentally, by being in a new job. It was a very competitive place, and also very hierarchical. Usually, I am pretty good at whatever I try to do (please excuse me for that), and I used to try to let people know what I was capable of. But in this particular situation, I needed to keep the job, which was not a certainty at all. If I could keep the job for a certain amount of time, I would get health insurance. And I had just had three miscarriages, and was fast approaching 40.

So I decided to behave differently than I ever had, but for purely selfish reasons. I would not be me. I would just not do that. I would be quiet, keep my nose down, never volunteer to demonstrate what I could do, never offer to show someone how to solve a problem, never promote myself, just sit in my little cubicle and mind no one's business but my own, no matter what. I did that for several years.

It's so funny, that taught me all the lessons I had been trying so hard to learn. It was really weird. It was like, I want to learn this LESSON: struggle, struggle, struggle, struggle, struggle. Nothing. I did that over and over and over and over and over. You get the picture. At this point, I was desperate to have a child, and I needed health insurance. So, I made myself shut up, be quiet, watch everyone else do their dances and their competitions and their manipulations.

This was in a very real, very hidebound bureaucracy, where really talented people ended up doing the work for their bosses, who got paid three times, nay, six times as much, but there was no way for the worker bees ever to become one of the boss bees. Very strict rules there. And a lot of bitterness and resentment.

Those years, and that behavior I took on for purely selfish reasons, turned me into a very differenvt person. I learned so much. And I didn't realize I was learning it as I was doing it, either. So it was a painless education, but a thorough one, nonetheless. And I thank God for that. For I cannot imagine an easier way to learn a more trying lesson.

Now, if only my family members might recognize that I am not the same person that they knew....

I look back and giggle and giggle and giggle. really, it is not like me to find the easy way to do anything. I did it, once. I suppose I could do it, again?

I don't know precisely what to say. Keep your eye on the donut, not on the hole.

She's in a lot of pain. If it doesn't get sorted out soon, I fear the worst. This is not about politics, or good vs. evil or anything more than another human being in agony. She needs balance. From that, could come self-forgiveness and peace. I think. I've been asking that she be healed for a couple of days now. We'll see what develops. Anyone who wants to join me could focus on balance.

41. For those with health issues

There seem to be health issues for some, and since the theme is Tibetan Buddhism, I thought I post this advice from Lama Yeshe:

When you do Medicine Buddha practice, recite the names of the seven Medicine Buddhas. Make strong prayers to Medicine Buddha for your own purification and the purification of all sentient beings, especially those that have illnesses similar to yours. Visualize rays of light and nectar emanating from Medicine Buddha and flowing into you, purifying sickness, harm caused by evil spirits, delusions and negative karma, and obstacles. At the end, visualize that you are completely purified and in the nature of light—concentrate very strongly on that. Recite Medicine Buddha mantra as much as you can every day, not just when you are sitting doing formal practice but also when you are walking about. Put your whole life and trust, for this life and future lives, completely in the hands of Medicine Buddha. Have strong faith that Medicine Buddha can bring you complete happiness in this and all future lives, and enlightenment. Even when death comes, have total trust and faith that Medicine Buddha will help and bring you to the pure land. Always pray that you want whatever is most beneficial for sentient beings. Pray to Medicine Buddha in this way.

42. I wish to ask everyone

for their continued light in helping me deal with finding a place to live.

I've run into some very bad luck, and even worse people. Today I actually had a (potential, obviously not now) landlord who, hearing I was on disability, started asking me intrusive questions, to which I said that they were my concerns, not his (budget, etc); said outright he wouldn't rent to me; and when I told him that discrimination was against the law and I would call the local authority, started yelling at me. :-(

I did not raise my voice during any of that conversation, I was polite and thought I handled it well.

The vacancy rate is extremely low, but his apartment building (a small, but well kept one) had 2 suites for rent. Nothing else available within at least a mile radius of a highly sought after neighbourhood (right near the university). Tells me a lot about him.

I intend to call tomorrow and lodge a complaint, but I have been running into so much discrimination. This is usual, though I haven't had quite that level of anger hurled at me before; it's usually much more covert. Sort of like people taking their bad days out on service staff, except I'm not working. That puts me even lower on the totem pole, according to some people.

I feel so very down right now. It doesn't feel like I'll find a place. Rents are sky high, but the disability pensions aren't going up. And I've got at least 5 months still to wait on the list for a rent subsidy.

Any good thoughts or wishes or energies or even hugs would be much appreciated. :hug:

It's taken me a while to open up and ask for support, and open up my private life. I thought of doing this in the Lounge, but I'm still at heart a pretty private person, and would love to do it amongst a small, enlightened group of friends. :loveya:

I was very upset this afternoon after the call; I emailed a friend about it, then became a bit quieter, calmer. I think it was because a. I did the right thing - I was calm, I did not think he needed to know exactly how my budget would be for the month (however I fed myself is my concern, I said), and b. that I plan to take some sort of action, and c put two and two together (2 vacancies in his nice building with no others around) and you've got people with problems there, people wanting to move out. Or perhaps people who he kicked out. A landlord with a temper with the only 2 suites for rent in that area. Hmmm...

Not revenge, but I intend to call the local landlord and tenant board. I have a "feeling" that they will say landlords cannot discriminate against me because of a disability, or because my source of income (provincial disability). I have a feeling they also will say that if they don't feel you can meet the income requirements, than they have the right to refuse.

So...disabled people who on disability pensions can't be discriminated against if they are in a wheelchair, or if they are on AISH or CPP disability, but can be because these programs don't pay enough for people to live on. So - what it comes down to - is that they can discriminate against the disabled. Doesn't take more than 10 brain cells to figure that one out. :grr:

I see these indignities being heaped upon the poor all the time in my province...and I've had it. I really want to do something about it. (I Had another potential landlord make a quip about people on my provincial disability not wanting to work. Snide remark, and of course I didn't get the apartment (there were many applications for it), and while it bugged me, it didn't hit me like this did. Being yelled at, and demanding to know how I spend my money. :grr:

Good LORD. In my neck of the woods, despite its flaws, people bend over backwards to assist the disabled/physically or developmentally challenged. So, I can't even envision something like what you describe having happened to you occurring where I live. Then again, I don't live with those obstacles, so maybe it happens when I'm not looking, but again, GOOD LORD. That is INSANE. I'm sorry.

I am frustrated beyond belief, and more than a little angered and hurt at how difficult it is to find housing.

I've met a couple of others along the way who have the same problems as me.

Many people here tend to lump those on disability with the homeless, those with addictions, etc. That they aren't worth much, that they only cause trouble, that they should just "pull up their bootstraps", etc. :-(

It was great at first--suddenly, I could see my potential. It was if I had backed up from a large painting that I had been standing nose-to-canvass with for at least a year. And it was HUGE. So much bigger than I ever could have imagined. I had been eyeballing this one tiny part of it for so long, I couldn't see the background or the frame. But now--my problem is that I feel too far back and I can't see the foreground. Which is kind of getting to be a problem because life fucking happens in the foreground. I don't know which step to take next. Clarity, please? A psychic "zoom in" button? Something??

I have been in kind of a confusion myself. I feel like running in cricles (duh "circles) -don't know what I want to or even should do next.
But oddly, the core is still at peace.

Could someone please pray that the car gets fixed ASAP? And that mindless broken shit stops fucking with my life? This is ridiculous. I no sooner get a stable job THAN I HAVE NO WAY TO GET TO IT. The last time I checked, living as you should was supposed to be REWARDED with further tools for success, not the DESTRUCTION OF ONE'S LAST OPTIONS FOR ESCAPE, SURVIVAL AND HOPE.

We are currently burning candles for enlightenment as exactly nothing around me is helping us gain insight as to what is supposed to happen now, or what I am supposed to do next. Let's hope that helps.

for me soon--like, tomorrow, and b) that they can do something to neutralize my roommates, ASAP, like tomorrow?

I worked really hard to maneuver my way into the job I was just hired for, because it really seemed like the Universe wanted me to have it for some reason--I thought possibly for some "emergency funds" with which to purchase necessary life items including, in a couple of months, a car, but now that I've taken the opportunity, all of a sudden I'm getting really bad Tarot cards. But one reason I took this job was that no other opportunities were presenting themselves--why would the Universe want me to do something that would only result in more trouble?

The biggest problem is my female roommate, who is absolutely dancing on my last nerve, and is the primary reason I need to find other opportunities with more money and less weirdness, (my current, hopefully temporary job, is with a relatively conservative company with strange rules). If I don't, so that I can finish my novel in peace and then get the hell out of here, I feel like I'm going to take said roommate and hack her into a thousand pieces. I hope everyone will forgive me for putting that so crassly, but--there it is. She's insane, she won't leave me alone, and at this time, when I am at a critical point, with next to no way to even leave the house, her disgusting, irresponsible bullshit is the last thing I need. I have tried asking the guides to literally, flat-out muzzle her, or show her a way to be less of an insane, inappropriate person while I am trying to finish my book, a task appointed to me by the gods, but they've chosen to be silent on that one.

So, could everyone pray for BlueIris to see new opportunities, and/or "fix" her roommates? Obviously, someone or something hacking them into a thousand pieces isn't really an option, but at least the female one needs to be given incentive to stay as far away from me as possible.

My daughter and few others were being driven by one of the leaders of the buddhist youth group she participated in at the time. As they were driving along, they were cut off in a very dangerous way. Um, my guides are a little more in touch, now, I think. I even think it's remotely possible that the powerful, protective spirit who bailed back in June has returned, which is nice. I hope he can stay for a while. Thanks to all who sent light and hope to facilitate the reconnection. The general sense I am now receiving from them is that they didn't know I was that stuck, they didn't know I was that upset and they didn't know I needed this much help to gain additional clarity on my future at this time. It's possible they were out of contact because I didn't indicate that I needed more support and guidance, or it's possible they had other reasons for being in incommunicado, that part is a little muddled.

I've also been kinda told that my roommate is acting the way she is because she is scared that I am going to flee from the living situation without notice, leaving she and her partner stranded without a third renter in the middle of the fall. This is making her cranky, unhappy, neurotic and some other unpleasant things, and yes, it's making her tempted to try to mess with me to sabotage my efforts at increased financial success. Also...she may be getting a little kick in the pants to "motivate" me from the spirit world so that I will continue to make good on my recent commitment to change and personal transformation. I've explained that I will do my best to continue to move forward, but that her particular gods-given "skills" at motivating me are doing more harm than good. No word on whether they can get her to scale back the crazy so I can continue to evolve without this much irritation. (I did ask them to try to help her assuage her fears without doing insane things, like abusing drugs or alcohol, which would solve both our problems--her worries, my extreme reactions to her inappropriateness.)

Sigh. I hope the guides can stick around for a while, at least until I have some more of the financial aspects of this transition process ironed out. I've reminded them that I understand their desire to avoid the development of a co-dependent relationship between us, which is handy because one of my bigger fears is relapsing into a co-dependency trap, (that aspect of the human-guide relationship works for me for this reason) but that my other fears are of failure and abandonment. I've mostly got a handle on that first one, (mostly) but the second is one we're going to be working on for a long, long time. So I hope me and the guides will be able to work out a balance between my needs and their responsibilities WRT those areas. And that my roommate can manage to chill for the next two weeks especially. I can't hide in my room literally all the time.

Donna R. She's actually my late grandfather's second wife, but she was my paternal grandma longer than his first wife was. She is suffering from pulmonary fibrosis and though she has lingered 5+ years after her initial diagnosis, my parents just phoned to say that she is entering the palliative phase of her care. I'm really requesting prayers for a peaceful walk into her final transition, as there isn't much to be done for her medically at this stage of the game. I'm trying to finish up some more of my own life-improvement projects as fast as I can, so I will hopefully be able to give her some good news about my own state soon, so she can move on with a greater sense of relief. Every other child and grandchild's affairs are basically settled, except for mine, and I get the sense that I am the one she's waiting on.

One is asked to approach this Sending-and-Taking meditation with an attitude of extraordinary compassion and love for all.
Think about all the suffering in the world. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to take that pain and convert it to happiness, health, and well-being? Wouldn't it be a worthwhile thing if you could open your heart, accepting suffering and being able to transform it into love and goodness?

Start By Accepting Your Own Being:
When trying to generate compassion for all beings, it is essential to remember that you are one of them.
