My raven with the broken wing....
I posted a few days ago about how, several weeks ago, I noticed a raven with a broken left wing. I tried to contact wildlife rescue but had no luck at first. When I finally found someone to help, they were two hours away and I'd have to bring the raven to him.

I set out to do just that, but the raven had disappeared.

A week later, he reappeared -- MUCH to my surprise (and the wildlife rescue person said he'd likely perish within 48 hours) -- and seemed absolutely fine, not in distress. I see him more and more frequently in the last two weeks, and now I see that he knows where I set out water and food for him. He's out there hoarding it, taking it to what he feels is shelter.

I also notice that other crows seem to be helping him out. It fills my heart.

I really think trying to capture him at this point would inflict undue stress, since he seems to be okay. If he were in distress, that would be different.

I feel rather blessed to have a raven friend and thought I'd share.

:)

:hi:

1. Does your crow seem to have some sort of shelter? I don't
think cats would bother him, but a larger critter might, like a hawk.

Good on you for providing a refuge for this messenger of the gods. I hope your friendship blossoms!

3. Yes, he seems to.
The cats around here are rather docile, and not much larger than the raven (mine are indoor kitties but the neighbor kitties do hang out here...I'm "cat" woman).

Interestingly, I normally have a lot of hawk activity (and the hawk is my primary totem), but I haven't noticed them nearly as much as I normally do this time of year. The crows and ravens have been more prevalent. Now I'm grateful the hawks aren't here...at least not now...as I would worry for my new friend.

He seems to have a shelter near a compost bin and trees/shrubs out back. The biggest problem right now is keeping food meant for him away from the squirrels!

What's interesting is that we've noticed other ravens calling out when he's in the backyard and someone seems to come close; like they're warning him. Hopefully they are hanging around, even when not visible to me, to protect him.

He walks around quite a large area within the neighborhood though! It just seems like he's found refuge here.

;)

7. WOOT!!!!!!!
Actually Ravens and Crows will gather together and attack and harrie a hawk!!!
They also are VERY community orienter.
Crows and Ravens send out warning calls to EVERYBODY when a predator is near.

5. somebody posted a few months back about an injured raven
Edited on Sun Mar-20-11 06:08 PM by northernlights
hit by a car. The DUer saw something in the road, had to stop, realized it was a group of ravens. They looked up and stared at the car, but instead of flying off, stayed in place. The DUer watched in astonishment as they had surrounded and jointly herded their injured raven-friend off the road.

Community.

6. Oh my goodness....
that brings me to tears.

But they're "good" tears...tears of appreciation.

Why does that get to us so much? When animals display traits that are often so difficult for we humans...

I know you guys have heard it before, but I find this raven connection especially powerful and magickal, given that I am about one week away from the full-on launch of Wishadoo, my vision of the Community of Tomorrow.

And here comes this wonderful bird and his friends, displaying authentic community.

I wonder if this seemingly "less-abled" raven isn't a mirror for me in some way. To the outside world he appears injured and at a disadvantage, but I'm seeing incredible strength in him, making do with what is available to him, making the most of his abilities, appreciating those who are helping.

Yes, I do believe there is a mirror and he's here for a reason. Now I'm crying even more...

Thank you for sharing that, NL. Time to get away from the computer for the evening.

9. red pepper
OGR, if you want to keep the squirrels off the raven's food, sprinkle it with red pepper. You can buy a package of this at a pet store. It's a formulation of capsicum. Birds cannot detect red pepper but squirrels sure can. It's inexpensive.

Hey, I've got a new animal buddy, too! Mr. Yowley came to our house a couple days ago. He is the most beautiful tiger gray cat with mesmerizing blue eyes. Electric, actually! He has a white bib, white sox on all four feet, and white whiskers!! I don't know what his story is but I have been feeding him and I made him a little kitty house to hang out in but he's not using it. Maybe soon. It has a nice warm kitty bed in it (powered by a heating pad).

We don't get stray cats around here as the animal organizations in NJ are quite efficient.

However, I must do my due diligence and see if there are any flyers posted around for him, as I am quite sure he is someone's cat. While he is slender, he is young. He hasn't been on the loose for long, as he looks well cared for.

He has fallen for my Greenie girl, my white kitty of about five years of age. He follows her around like a little brother. It's so cute!

10. How sweet!!!
First of all, kudos to NJ animal organizations. :applause:

So nice that Mr. Yowley is being cared for so well until he's reunited, and that he's found love with your Greenie girl! :)

Thanks so much about the tip re: red pepper!!! I'll get that today!
