Touchdown Jesus
I saw a few posts in GD on this, but I was curious of this group's take on it.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-06-15-touchdown-jesus-fire_N.htm?csp=34

My take - I wonder if this is the Universe's way of saying think again about our beliefs as a nation. It's becoming destructive, and I don't think Jesus ever meant it the way it's become.

1. Poetic justice for sure
Struck by lightning and all.

I like to think it's a sign. Religion in the U.S. has gone off the rails, absolutely. It's time we move on to something new in the spiritual realm. I'd love to think that personal spirituality is it, and people will join faith-based groups purely to participate in community-oriented volunteer/charity work.

6. A bolt of lightning struck the ship capturing oil from a blown-out BP well in the Gulf of Mexico...

2. Geesh....

What is the story behind that statue? Doesn't seem reverential at all...just typical American gawdy as we do so well with our super size everything. :eyes:

I find it especially poignant that it was in the middle of a pond (man made), with fish, all of which the article said are "dead or dying."

:(

Another symbol of what Mother Earth is experiencing...

5. I couldn't agree more
Most Christian denominations of this country have been captured as a support system for the corporate power through their strong affiliation with the Republican Party due to insane fears of women's rights and gay rights; which of course have been pushed at them by their corporate aligned leadership of greedy "men of GAWD".

8. I couldn't agree with you more, Proud_Lefty
Why some people think that a symbol, especially a ginormous symbol, makes them all holy and stuff is beyond me.

I think the person's actions are what matters, not the size of the Jesus (or whatever deity they prefer) in their yard.

10. ... isn't there a Commandment about not worshiping false idols?
 Both "Touchdown Jesus" and the Oil Rig would certainly fall under the 'false idol' category, IMO.

11. Good observation!
If these fundies are so holy why do THEY never figure this stuff out? Maybe because they are way too busy working so hard, feeding the greed of their false prophet (or is it "profit") preachers?

12. Reminds me of the guys fighting for the statue
of the Ten Commandments to stay in the Federal (?) building. Stephen Colbert interviewed the guys and asked him to recite those ten commandments and the guys didn't have a clue. Nailed him good. It's about appearances, not substance.
