Bittersweet From My Sister.
On Wednesday my sister ran into an elderly neighbor, Mr. Green, at the mailbox, a joyful fellow always singing hits from the '70s and '80s. Well, she joined in on this one obscure tune and they had a good time at the mailbox not caring who heard or saw them. He was shocked that she knew the song!

She found out That night that he had a massive heart attack and was hospitalized in a coma. She went to see him and the doctors said that his prognosis was not good. We prayed for him and she waited anxiously for his family to come.

Last night, she went to the hospital again and he was fading fast - no more brain waves. The doctors said if no family showed up within half an hour, they will pull the plug. Another neighbor came by as well and together they talked to him and kissed him and told him that he must stay with them. But the plug was pulled and they watched the monitor as his heart rate slowly declined and he passed just as his son rushed in.

She and the other neighbor comforted his son as best they could and even got him to laugh at the stories they told him about his dad. The neighbor drove my sister home. While in the car she said that she was a mess crying and sobbing. She had never kept vigil before.

Just then, the tune she and Mr. Green were jamming to came on the radio. She said, "I couldn't believe my ears and just knew!" You know :) :grouphug:

4. That's a beautiful yet sad story.
This is how things should be. We're all family and it was wonderful that your sister and her neighbor were with him so he did not die alone. They also were there to comfort his son who probably tried his best to get there in time. Your sister sounds like an awesome human being. Thank you for sharing. After a rough week, it was so wonderful to read an uplifting, and yes, bittersweet story that highlights the better of humanity.

11. Thanks, Celebration.
I have a deep sense of certainty that he has accepted his condition though he hung on for his son's sake.

6. I'm sure she knows that even though it was difficult
that it's an honor and privilege to be with someone when their spirit leaves the body. And such a reassurance when she heard the song that she and Mr. Green had shared. What a wonder-filled moment.

This was a real blessing.

Indeed, the song made her stop crying and start laughing. And I'm sure Mr. Green was cracking up too :) I will pass your words on to her.

8.  So poignant, and indeed bittersweet.

I have never had the privilege of being with a loved one at the time of their passing. It seems they planned it that way somehow. Your sister will cherish this memory for the rest of her life, I'm sure. I'm just wondering if you know what particular song they were singing, 'cause I'm a fan of the music of that era. Thanks for sharing with us. God speed Mr. Green!

9. I agree, JA.....

What a blessing ~ it will indeed stay with her forever ~ yet also so poignant. What a gift to be able to offer Mr. Green's son.

I'm curious about the song, too! ;)

Thank you for sharing, KoB. Godspeed to Mr. Green on his new journey....
