Question for fellow raw/homecooked feeders: what do you do to supply your pets with calcium? I'm not brave enough to feed bones (even hard-core BARFers admit their dogs get chipped teeth; plus I've read too many "freak accident" reports that result from bones), but I know if you feed raw meat, it's essential to add calcium from some source, or the calcium will be leached right out of the animal's own bones. One author recommends 1 tablespoon of calcium per pound of raw meat, which is the formula I've been following. I've been using Solid Gold Steamed Bonemeal, but my last jar is almost empty, and with the advent of mad cow disease in the U.S., I'm wary of buying it again. I know you can use baked and powdered eggshells, but that seems like an awful lot of trouble and energy expenditure, especially in my little bitty kitchen. I'll do it if need be, of course ... but, what do others do?
