Flea killer question
so now that i've developed the habit of going to the humane society often to look at and hold the cats and kittens, i think i may have passed on a flea or two to my cat nikko a few days ago -- mainly because he was scratching a little here and there... so yesterday, i buy hartz flea drops for an over 10 lb cat (though he's only about 8 or so) and he has been scratching at it NON STOP! i can tell it's bothering him really bad... the oiliness of it still hasn't gone away, though i've washed him over and over there with a warm cloth... he's practically BEGGING me to scratch him there incessantly...

anyone else have this problem?

i recommend anyone in the future NOT to use hartz... nikko's just miserable right now.

1. I don't have a solution to your problem, but it is
a known fact that Hartz products are actually dangerous to pets.

2. The Hartz stuff IS dangerous
Give the cat a bath if he will tolerate it. That will kill the fleas and remove some of the Hartz stuff. Call your vet and see if it is safe to put a flea collar on him or to use Frontline so soon after using the Hartz stuff.

3. I use Biospot for my cats and dogs. In the mean time try some rescue

remedy salve and/or vitamin E. Cut open a capsule and put it on the spot. Try rubbng some flaxseed oil on the spot. ****

For the future, don't overdose on those flea killers. They can be harmful to our babies.

6. fwiw Origins sells a great 'dog' shampoo Lavendar
that I have used on my cats all the time. It's very gentle, and fleas despise lavendar. And the added bonus is they smell wonderful after they are dry. :)

Hope Nikko feels better soon...

5. Always get your flea prevention from your vet...
the stuff they sell at Target or in grocery stores, etc, is not the same strength and does not work as well.

Bella, who has been battling fleas in Florida for MONTHS now with a dog who is resistant to ALL flea prevention!

7. Almost any product by Hartz is no good
at least as far as their flea products are concerned. Frontline is the best IMO, but if you want something cheaper go with Zodiac. Flea collars will only kill fleas around their necks and maybe a little around their heads, but the rest of the body is a free party. Some kind of drop like Frontline is the best way to go.

9. And long haired cats will usually have bad
reactions to flea collars.

As for Hartz...their products have been implicated in many, many pet deaths. Before I knew that we tried using one of them. I think it was Blockade. The cat moved and I got the stuff on my hand. Even though I washed immediately, I was still sick like you wouldn't believe less than 15 minutes later.

8. I've also bought Neem Oil
both straight and in a shampoo. I still use the Frontline, but I have one who is allergic to flea bites, so I thought I'd try neem oil for his baths too rather than a shampoo with more toxins in it. Has anyone else used neem oil?
