question about bunnies as pets
Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 11:57 PM by NJCher
I have a townhouse for rent which has beautiful hardwood floors. I've taken digital photos of the townhouse which feature the floors and other elements of the place. I had said in my write-up of the place that pets as in cats were OK. Dogs, no.

So a potential tenant calls up and asked if the entire place was hardwood floors or was any of it carpeted. I responded that it was all hardwood floors except for the rec room. The woman came to see the place and we did the tour and also had a good conversation. At the conclusion of our discussion, she revealed that she had a bunny and this was one reason for her interest in the hardwood floors.

Now, my question is this: is this bunny going to do its business all over the floors? I really know nothing about bunnies as pets. If I am surmising correctly, does this cause permanent damage to the floors? She did mention something about a cage but I know nothing beyond that. She works in NYC and consequently is gone at least 10 hours a day during the week. She also mentioned that the bunny is the love of her life and gets everything its little heart desires.

So to summarize my questions:

a) is the bunny going to leave droppings, etc., on the floors?
b) how do the bunny's humans usually deal with this situation?
c) if I am surmising correctly, does this cause any permanent damage to the floors?
d) is there anything that the bunny's human can do to mitigate this situation?
e) the townhouse complex has rules that say cats are OK; dogs are not. They say nothing about bunnies. Which category does the bunny fall in? More like cats or like dogs?

1. I have had bunnies as pets.
And mine were trained to use a litter box. If she is an experienced rabbit owner, her bunny will use a litter box. Also, their droppings are little hard balls and don't cause any damage to floors.

2. Rabbits LOVE chewing carpet.....
cords, you name it.

Rabbits are generally very neat creatures and will do their business in one corner of their cage. (since this lady is gone 10 hours a day, the rabbit will probably spend most of it's time in it's cage)

To answer your questions:

a) maybe, but they are hard little pellets, I'm guessing Bugs will go in his cage

b) if Bugs has a number 1 accident, I'm sure humans will mop up. My bunnies, when running around outside their cage, would rarely have an accident, only if they were spooked or sick, but rarely. They would usually wee in their cages.

c) I don't know

d) humans have responsibility to care for their bunnies, and they should be made aware that any damage to property is their responsibility.

e) Bunnies are generally very quiet, except when they are scared, then they can stomp their feet and make *some* noise to any tenants below. (heh heh) They are pretty unique animals.

3. Well, looks like "Here comes Peter Cottontail...."

OMG, how I laughed, and especially with the smiley animations!

Thanks to both of you. My concerns have been alleviated.

5. You are welcome
Remember the thing to "worry" about with rabbits is what they will chew, not what they will wee on. :)
Thank goodness there isn't new carpet, because if bunnies grab an edge with their teeth....yikes! :argh:

:D
