A survey for dog owners -- please help if you can!
My youngest daughter is doing a school project on dogs. Part of her project was to distribute a survey to dog owners, and tally up the results for her final presentation. Unfortunately, the response she's received from her "target group" has been less-than-impressive...to date, she hasn't received a single response. Since the deadline is coming up, she asked me to post the survey to DU's pet group. Most of these questions are multiple-choice, so responding should be relatively easy.

g. Other (please specify) The GSD frequenty appears to want to bite, but never has and is essentially a gentle dog. The BC once snapped at a woman who tried to pet her while she was on a leash. She also bit the groomer who failed to muzzle her while using a blow drier, that one drew blood.

Our GSD, who always seem so mean, is a cupcake she loves her peeps and will do anything and suffer anything for us. She may at first seem intimidating to small kids because of her size, but they soon love her right back.

3. Let's see...
Edited on Tue Jan-12-10 06:01 AM by Behind the Aegis
1. Long Haired Chihuahua (will be four on Wednesday, Jan. 13th)

2b.

3e. Knows "B-E-D" (spelled) means time to go to bed with (my) partner. "O-U-T" means "go outside to potty in the backyard." "Daddy" means my partner. Knows my name. Knows "chicken," and "cheese." "Who's at the door?" translates to "run to the door and bark his head off." Knows "Tony" (our cat). "Give Tony a kissy" he knows to bump noses with Tony.

4e. Depends on his mood. Sometimes looks for noise, sometimes barks, sometimes gives the "stink eye."

5d. Usually backs away.

6e. Depends. He takes his time. He is not always scared of cats, but will watch them. The strays at my house are now used to him and come to greet him.

7b. (barks at first, but then "loves" on them)

8e.

9b.

10. Nothing I am aware of other than basics.

11c. Depends on age of children, number of children, and maturity of children.

4. Always happy to talk about dogs!
Edited on Tue Jan-12-10 09:57 AM by lukasahero
1. What breed(s) are your dog(s)? Mixed: Basenji, Collie, Coonhound, etc (That's all one dog...)

2. Which of these are your dog(s) most like?
d. Frightened of everything (I should elaborate - Bella was born wild and suffered considerable abuse at the hands of the people she did come in contact with. As a result, she is a real scaredy-dog. She has gained a tremendous amount of confidence in the year that she has been with us but she has a long way to go before she will fully trust the world around her.)

3. What types of commands do your dog(s) know?
e. Other (please specify): Sit, stay, down, foot, touch, hug, front, come, look, leave it, drop it, bring it, in, quiet, speak, heel, finish, up, off. I think that's about it. She is still of the age where she debates whether or not she's going to 'come' but the rest of it she does pretty religiously.

4. What do your dog(s) do when a loud noise occurs?
e. Other (please specify): Runs to us for protection. Sometimes, runs away in panic.

5. How do your dog(s) react to other dogs?
e. Other (please specify): Depends on the situation. She generally uses a play bow to greet dogs off-leash. On-leash, she tends to bark and try to get to them. We're working on that.

6. How do your dog(s) react to cats/other animals?
e. Other (please specify): Bella has a strong prey drive due to her origin. Everything is food to her although the only thing she's ever 'caught' are slugs, she still will pull your arm off if she sees a cat (while outside) and has climbed trees in chase of squirrels and birds.

7. How do your dog(s) react to strangers?
e. Other (please specify): She's fearful of most people other than us (regardless of how much socializing we've done). She has gotten better and let my nephews' girlfriend pet her the other day on their first meeting but usually she runs away and barks at people she doesn't know (inside) or just avoids them (outside).

8. Have your dog(s) ever bitten anyone?
e. No

9. Have your dog(s) changed as they aged?
e. Other (please specify): She's only two so she's maturing but still has a delightful amount of puppy in her. She has also gained a great deal of confidence.

10. What do you think is the best breed of dog for families with children?
a. Labrador Retrievers (My past experience as a Lab owner comes with the full acknowledgment of the special needs of Labs but I stand by my belief that they are the best dogs for children - generally easy-going, people-oriented, loyal, gentle, playful beasts.)

11. Are you aware of any recent innovations in dog care or training? If you are, please describe. I am always trying to learn more about dogs, dog care and training. My current fascination is with canine communication and learning to read and use the "calming signals" that dogs use to communicate with each other. (See answers above re: scaredy-dog.) Bella has also given me opportunity to learn and really understand the 'positive-only' approach to dog training.

11. Dog survey
Edited on Thu Jan-14-10 10:21 AM by LiberalEsto
Dog Project Survey Questions

1. What breed(s) are your dog(s)?

One is a 2 year old male half King Charles Cavalier spaniel and half chihuahua, the other is a 6 month old female half King Charles Cavalier Spaniel and half American Eskimo. Both neutered.

2. Which of these are your dog(s) most like?

b. Playful and friendly - The half Eskimo

e. Other Watchful and protective - the half chihuahua

3. What types of commands do your dog(s) know?

e. Other (please specify)
Both know sit, stay (more or less), out, down, here, up, crate (get in the crate) and "drop it" (spit out whatever you have in your mouth). Also "ring the bell" to ring the bell hanging from the doorknob to let us know you need to go potty outside. The half-chi knows lie down, but the half-eskie is still learning.

4. What do your dog(s) do when a loud noise occurs?

e. Other (please specify)
Look in the direction of the sound. The half chi will usually let out a small growl and go back to what he was doing. The half eskie might startle for a second, then go back to whatever she was doing.

5. How do your dog(s) react to other dogs?

a. Bark and growl at them menacingly - the half chi, if it's a male dog.

c. Sniff them and become friends - The half eskie.

6. How do your dog(s) react to cats/other animals?

e. Other (please specify)
The half chi tried hard to make friends with our 2 cats, but was too pushy, then gave up. The half eskimo lay down and groveled in front of the cats and eventually won over one of them. The other cat hates everybody. The half eskie tries to make friends with other cats.

7. How do your dog(s) react to strangers?

b. Sniff them and jump up on them, licking them all over, but the half chi doesn't do that as much since he turned 2.

8. Have your dog(s) ever bitten anyone?

e. No.

9. Have your dog(s) changed as they aged?

a. Yes, they got more aggressive - the half-chi got more protective.

e. Other (please specify)
The half eskie is only 6 months old and hasn't changed yet.

10. What do you think is the best breed of dog for families with children?

c. Other Breed (Please explain). King Charles Cavalier spaniels are very gentle lap dogs and I adore them. Blended with a slightly larger, more playful breed like American Eskimo, I think they would make an ideal pet for kids.

11. Are you aware of any recent innovations in dog care or training? If you are, please describe.
No.

19. I don't know about anyone else but
I'd really love to get a peak at her project. The questions she asked (or perhaps more accurately, the answers she gave to choose from) seemed to have a theme and I'd be interested in at least knowing her thesis if not seeing her whole project. What grade is she in? (Only asking because these weren't the 'ordinary' questions/answers one expects from say a grammar school/jr high kid.)

And of course, I'm sure we'd all love to know how she did! :)

23. Yes...
I'd like to know more about the project and the results of her survey, too, and whether or not she got an A!

14. Good luck with your project! Hope you can get 2 responses out of this
1. (1)Pit bull and (1)pit mix

2. Pit = C, Pit mix = D

3. Pit = B, Pit mix = B. The pit is kind of dopey & stubborn. The pit mix is very smart.

4. Pit = C, Pit mix = D and sometimes she pees on the floor!

5. Pit = B, Pit mix = B

6. Pit = C, Pit mix = B

7. Pit = A, Pit mix = A

8. Pit = D, Pit mix = D Nobody's breaking into THIS house!

9. Pit = C, Pit mix = C They're both sleeping all the time, but they're both 11 years old.

10. C = I think mutts are the best, but like every other dog, they need to be trained and properly supervised around small children. The children also need to learn to respect the dogs and treat them accordingly.

11. For training, Cesar Milan is amazing! I love his approach of "rehabilitating the dogs and training the humans". There's no such thing as a bad dog! With the proper training and treatment, even the Michael Vick dogs are being rehabilitated and adopted out to good homes, so there's hope for them all!

11. Are you aware of any recent innovations in dog care or training? If you are, please describe.

My dog has been enrolled in doggy class twice. In the first one, we used "clicker training," in which the dog was given a food treat when he did the right thing, accompanied by a click of the clicker. Eventually, the click becomes the reward because he associates it with the food. :-)

BTW, here's my dog, Jack. Hope that you get a terrific grade on your project! :hi:

:loveya:
