Has your dog hugged you today?
A light bulb went off over my head this past week or so ...... our German Shepherd Dog hugs us. She displays the same behavior in the same circumstances all the time. When you "coo" to her or otherwise show some affection, she puts her (big) head on your hip or thigh and then wraps her (big) body around you as much as she can, pressing against you.

It sure feels like a hug.

I have no idea if it is, but I have never seen a dog do this.

I've seen them smile. But never hug.

I could be way off base with this. Anyone know what behavior I am describing?

1. Be careful Clown. A dog doesn't necessarily know the difference
between a hug and a hump.

2. I had a foster one time who hugged
She was a lab and if you were sitting down, she would have her big old head in you lap with her legs wrapped around you. And she was not humping, she just loved to give hugs. She had been attacked by another dog where she had previously lived, so she was a bit iffy around other dogs. She would act like she loved them, and wanted to play, but if they responded she was a bit aggressive about it. But she definitely loved people.

5. Hmmmm ..... I wonder .....
When it comes to other dogs, our GSD is the opposite - very passive. Any other dog can boss her around. Even little dogs like the one two doors away who weighs less than our GSD's right paw! The little one ran ours up onto the porch!

But ours ***loves*** her peeps!

6. I taught Bella to give me a hug
before I leave for work and when I come home. It was my way of teaching her not to jump indiscriminately.

I kneel down (she's not that big) and she carefully jumps up and places her front feet on my shoulders. She then kisses and nibbles my nose and we have our little hug-fest.

9. Yes the jumping...
when we come in the door from just about anywhere (even taking out the trash)...Before he gets any attention, we race to the bed and tell him to be "sweet" he promptly plops over on his side and lays there very very still why we give kisses to the head. If you stand up too soon he continues to lay there and looks at you sadly and the kisses resume, when he's had enough of being "sweet" then he jumps and runs to the kitchen for the treat. Being sweet can last 5 minutes on a good day.
