Strategies for Shedding Season
With spring here and summer on the horizon, the cat fur is flying around my place. I just finished a weekend of cleaning it up.

My plan is to wear a vinyl glove and stroke each kitty once a day and let the fur fly away in the wind. I'll take them outside for this, although mine are indoor cats (I'll have to be careful).

I also have one of those yellow sponges that gathers up the fur quite nicely. You can find them by Googling "cat fur sponge."

How about you? What innovative products do you use to get through this season?

1. That fur sponge is great!
I have had one for several years now, and, it does a wonderful job removing fur from furniture and clothing.

Brushing is also a good idea. I wouldn't trust Spidey to not escape if I took him outside to brush as there are so many "critters" here that really interest him (I can put Jake on the leash), so Spidey, at least, will need to be brushed more regularly in the house.

The good news is that, once the shedding is over with, there is less fur to clean up after for a while.

2. I use a shedding blade and Dyson.
Shedding blades really do remove the fur and I just pile it, throw what I can outside for the birds and vacuum. I do the cats and dogs daily. The ferrets tend to blow out all at once so I just wait until their fur is pretty loose and pull it all off by hand. They seem to be extremely ticklish when you try to brush them.

3. They make furminators for cats now...I have used one on my GSD. It is amazing.

If you google it, you may get a better price. Altho they are not cheap, they are worth the price.

4. Furminators are the greatest invention! I use it on my
large, excessively hairy cat, Oscar. The other cats get raked and combed. I must investigate the yellow sponge thingy, too. I also throw all the cat combings outside for the birds to use in their nests. I've found nests lined in horse hair and cat fur, and have even had chickadees come to the pet door to gather the fur from around the opening. I also have to vacuum more often during shedding season. Even with all the extra combing and brushing, I still wake up to find furry "tumbleweeds" rolling across the floor!

5. So, I am not the only person with furry "tumbleweeds" all over the house!!??
I also toss the brushed off fur out for the birds to use for nesting.

6. Speaking of nesting material
Years ago I watched a raven sitting on the back of our old leopard appy when he was losing his winter coat. This raven was picking off big chunks of hair for their nest, and Rowdy just kept eating his alfalfa.
