Sassy hurricane survivor is found

Owner retrieves dog at S.D. shelter

NANCEE E. LEWIS / Union-Tribune
Sassy, a pit bull terrier that survived Hurricane Katrina, was reunited with her owner, Robin Lewis, at the San Diego County Animal Shelter.

Sassy is one lucky dog.

When Hurricane Katrina flooded the house she was in, the pit bull terrier was able to climb on tall furniture to keep from drowning in the 7-foot-high water. Sassy survived three weeks on one bag of dog food. She was rescued Sept. 16 and became one of 100 dogs flown to San Diego from Louisiana by a wealthy donor.

In the meantime, her owner, Robin Lewis, was searching Web sites that carried photos of rescued dogs. Yesterday, Lewis flew here from Texas, where he and his family have been relocated, to pick up Sassy from the San Diego County Animal Shelter.

A tail did wag. Lewis nearly cried.

3. My college roommate is fostering a 4-legged refugee
for the Arizona Humane Society. S

She finally tracked down the New Orleans owner at an address in Houston, and they mailed her the information on where her pup ended up.

Here's hoping for another reunion!

9. I will let folks know
I'll post it on the Pets board (so it will stay around for a while)

My friend has all the resources of the AZ Humane Society at her disposal, so I'm guessing a match will be made. Until then, "Louie" (for Louisiana) will be livin' large at her hacienda!

11. The owner loved him enough to be sure he had tags
Naturally, the New Orleans phone number doesn't work, but fortunately, the owner has an unusual name, and my friend was able to find an online list that indicated that someone with the same name had relocated in Houston.

Just goes to show the value of I.D.!
