Here I go again - icons. I have icons on my desktop that come from the si
site that I am visiting - such as DU has it's own little logo. Then EBay, my bank, etc have their own logos/icons that went to my desktop AUTOMATICALLY when I created a shortcut. I did NOT go through the process where you can change your icons yourself.

All of a sudden all my desktop icons have turned into the big "E" that comes with all websites that don't provide their own icon.

I don't know how this happened or how to fix it. Help (please).

1. Wiped out your cookies and internet temp files lately?
If this is the case, your icons should come back after you revisit the sites.

This can also occur when you use spyware programs such as Ad-Aware, etc- they will also delete your cookies if you let them.

3. They pretty much automatically download again when you go back
to the sites. Go to 'em, browse a bit, and then do a right click on your desktop, and hit the REFRESH. Some times it won't work unti you reboot after browsing- yet another Microshaft "feature".

Another thing you can try is right clicking on the icon, and going into its properties. There's a Change Icon subset, but you have to know where the new icon is so you can browse to it. Unfortunately, most of these icons are stored in the IE temp folder, and there are a LOT of files in those folders. And the folders are NOT named so you can tell what site they are from.

4. You know..Also..
Go to Internet Explorer:
Click on "Tools"
Click on "Internet Options"
Go to "Settings" (the middle part with Temporary Internet Files)
Set your "amount of disk space to use" to 1 (one) Meg.

That's a holdover from the old days when internet speeds were incredibly slow and IE saved a bunch of Web Pages so the computer wouldn't have to find the page (s) you were on..You don't need it nowadays...

5. They're disappearing
because they're drawn from your browser cache. Sooner or later, all content in your cache expires to make room for newer stuff. If you have desktop shortcuts you want to keep permanently, you'll have to create a permanent icon collection for them.

Make a folder for your icon stash somewhere on your drive. Revisit each site and grab the file called "favicon" by navigating to the root URL and appending "favicon.ico" to it. For example, DU's icon is located at -- http://www.democraticunderground.com/favicon.ico . Right-click the icon image, save it to your new icon folder, but give it a new name before you do so you don't wind up overwriting a file called "favicon.ico" again and again.

Once you've got your collection, right-click each desktop icon, then --> Properties --> Change Icon --> Browse --> navigate to your icon folder and select the icon you want.

6. I DID IT!!!!!!! On the DU icon at least...but before I got it right, I
somehow got just the icon (it does not lead to anything) on my desktop and can't get rid of it. When I right click it, I am not given the opportunity to delete it.

But after that I did get the correct icon and it does lead to DU like it should. Thanks so much. It was very, very annoying losing my icons.

:) :)
