Need a Linux guide, zero to hero, without breaking the bank!
Edited on Tue May-31-05 12:36 PM by youspeakmylanguage
I've been trying to turn a Compaq Presario into a fully-functioning dedicated Linux desktop without really knowing the basics of Linux. I want to learn the basics, but I don't have $50 to spend on a good manual. The cheap ones I've read are pretty much glorified setup guides.

Can anyone suggest a good site or book for someone starting from scratch?

1. Just installed Linux myself
and I am in the same boat as you. I go here for info and resources:
http://forums.linuxiso.org/index.php
Hope that helps!

"Running Linux" O'Reilly press.

and http://www.justlinux.com/

Good luck and don't be afraid of fucking things up. You can always reinstall if you can't fix it. Fixing what you break is a great learning tool.

You can always go to the open source group, though it doesn't get much traffic.

3. Agreed ...

Both on the book and not being afraid. Unlike Windoze, if you "break" something under Linux, it turns out to be a learning experience.

The O'Reilly press put out some good books. Their Linux Pocket Guide is also good for a quick reference to some commonly used commands.

4. A few months of working with Linux really changes the way
look at computers. Even as an intellectual exercise it is worth it.
