1. This normally only happens after a major change adding new device, new OS software, disc left in
CD/DVD reader, add memory, etc. In order to help(if we can) we will need info; OS, make and model, a better description of the problem and what led up to it.

Also what is your level, can you replace a drive or memory, etc.

3. Thanks for responding. See message
After I let it sit turned off for half hour, it booted up ok. The back story here is that this is the computer my wife uses. I keep away as much as possible. But it is getting so slow, I think she may allow me to attempt to fix it. I will back up her data, which isnt much and give it a go. I would appreciate help at that time if you might be interested. I would be willing to do a restore if necessary. I did it once before when it was my computer.
Thanks again for responding.

6. Open..
... the case...check to make sure the Fan (s) are working.
Sounds like your processor is over-heating. (computer freezes)

2. Maybe it's trying to boot from a non-working source ..and that could...
..even be your hard drive.

Post more. :)

8. Depending on the case either take it off or if it's one like I have remove the side cover
get a can of air and a vacuum and hold the vacuum cleaner hose close but not touching anything and blast it down with the air, a little here and a little there, not too much air all at once as it gets mighty cold and you don't need to thermally shock anything in there but do give it a good cleaning pay extra attention to the heat sink on the hard drive and video processor and on the power supply, A little blast of air here and a little there and a lot of suction from the vacuum and you should be good to go. Make sure you clean the fins on the heat sinks and make sure you clean the fan blades themselves also the little holes in the power supply where the cooling air is drawn in. Put it back together and happy computing.
Anyway that's where I'd start.

12. I wonder if your master boot record has become corrupted
If none of the other suggestions here work, check in and we can go through it.

Fixing the MBR involves using your XP disc and the recovery console.
