I REALLY need some quick help re: blocked websites
Edited on Tue Jun-30-09 03:12 PM by whyzayker
I have some friends who still use IE. I know the IE8 update is lurking out there and these folks are having trouble accessing ANY websites. I've heard these folks talk of pop ups from security premium software.com and personal av blocking access.

Is this from the IE8 update? Should I just have these folks switch (finally) to Firefox?

1. Unlikely
those symptoms are from the update. Not enough information given for conclusions.
But it sounds like they need to scan for viruses and malware. If they have an infection, changing browsers isn't going to resolve it.

2. a bit more..
The reason I wondered if IE8 may be a culprit is these people all had problems after downloading the update.

As far as the "authors" of the website blocking, I'm only repeating what they said they've seen (personal av etc.) as far as being the source of the warning. I haven't seen anything first hand - which I hate. I was curious if anyone had recognized that specific problem or those two warnings.

My first thought was malware as well but it just seemed coincidental. Or that IE8 (like Vista), wouldn't let you blow your own nose without asking permission first.

3. Do you mean
they have an update to install IE8 or to update IE8? The updates TO the program often have additional security features.
Are you the tech for their computers?

If my PC looks at me sideways, I SCAN.

4. They've already updated...
..or they think so.

Very frustrating. I'd like not to advise them the wrong thing and I think I'll tell 'em what I said initially...run your scans, clean your registry and switch to Firefox....but that's just my opinion.

5. That's all you can do.
If they want to make sure the IE is up to date on security, they need to visit the Windows Update site.

If the scans turn up something, you'll have your answer!
