Is this normal for windows 2000 pro?
Look at all the crap running in the task bar!

I'm using someone else's computer - they have cable and yet this machine runs almost as slow as mine on dial up - is all this junk the reason why? When I try to scroll up or down pages or switch tabs it takes a long time to move. Also I can't seem to watch videos - you tube plays the sound but I can't get the video - any ideas?

Using firefox - what else do you need to know?

4. I told my sister I would see if I could clean up some of the mess.
But this computer is shared with her SO so now I'm not sure what stuff he actually wants on here. If it was just hers or if they were handy to ask I could just go one by one but this mess is too much. I think I know why she has her laptop locked up in the closet.

2. As a committed Techno-minimalist
That is one scary taskbar!

Rather than muck around with the computer owner's settings, maybe you could right click those system tray icons and shut them down for the duration. Of course they will always appear at next boot. Quicktime, Java updater have no need to be running at all times, I can't make out the icon next to the time. The temperature thingy probably does not use much in the way of resources. Real Player is a worry.

3. Yeah there is almost as much junk on the task bar as they have on their desktop!
I'm actually using the real player to stream my radio station from Tucson - there is no radio in the rest of the state! I think my sister had it set up once when I was trying to get her to listen to some show. But there is a quick time player and windows media too.

The first to the left of the time (which is 9 minutes fast, by the way - :wtf: ) is a windows auto update notifier, then continuing right to left: a java update, weatherchannel desktop, AIM,something called C-Media mixer, connection, quicktime, trash bin (why in the task bar?), network, files and folders (???), document file (???), internet server files, browser, real player, (hidden: windows media player, AIM6, quicktime, launch outlook express) firefox, launch outlook,IE, show desktop.

Almost like the normal start menu is sitting on the task bar??? Sure is weird.

5. Is she going to let you change stuff?
I would disable java and quicktime from loading at start up for starters. The java updater is the WORST. I can always tell when it is running. Ditto, Adobe.

6. She would, but him I'm not so sure about.
Unfortunately they are both out of the country and communication is limited. Oh well. At least I can get my e-mail and hang around DU - my needs are simple. I was hoping to be able to watch some videos and especially peruse Daily Show/Colbert archives as I can't do those on my slow dial up at home - but they don't work here either! :nopity:

10. Not sure. I've done it before and could follow instructions (or look up some of my past posts)

but I think I am going to just leave it alone. I'd hate to be accused of screwing anything up. (although that may happen anyway as this thing acts like it is about to die)

11. Let us know
if you want a walk along. Good people here. Ending task is only for the current session. Everything would be reloaded at the next boot up.

12. Thanks yes I am the biggest fan of the DU computer group! Do you think shutting some of that
off would help with video viewing?

9. oh yes I remember weatherbug from my first computer, but this is weatherchannel
and it is a desktop? It is showing the weather where my sister's SO is working while he is gone. I x-ed it off but it is still there in the task bar. Updates are waiting too but I think I'm too scared to touch any of it now that I see it.

14. I don't suppose it's polite
To do a quick reload and say the computer crashed? People are funny about all the crap that runs surreptitiously, seem to believe it's good for them.

On the extra toolbars in the task bar, this is something I use a lot. Comes from the (very) old Mac tweak of dropping an alias for your hard drive in the Apple Menu. I always keep a MyComputer toolbar and sometimes a drive or big folder I'm working on if I need quick access.

15.  Polite? Well, that would be in the presentation.
Devious? Yes, that too. }(
