Wireless help. WEP
I have a Lynsys USB wireless adapter on my desktop. XP SP2

TW set this up. In the front room there's the unit with the TV, phone and internet. The cable guy gave me WEP security, and put me on a channel that is already being taken by another wireless in the area (11).

I want to remove WEP and change the channel. Without calling TW. I have a lot of connectivity experience with cable/dsl/even dial up, but next to none with wireless.

Will someone help?

1. Open your web browser.
Navigate to http://192.168.100.1 (or something similar)
You may need to look up the address of your cable modem's configuration page.

Anyhoo..once you find the config page, you'll need the admin username and password.

Once you log in, you'll see tabs or menus for setting security and changing the wireless broadcast channel.

If your cable modem does not have built in wireless and you feed your signal from your cable modem into a wireless router (that broadcasts internet connectivity through your house) then you need to find the address (http://192.168.100.something) of your wireless router and do the config steps in there.

2. No router.
That page doesn't list the correct MAC, so guess it isn't related. I saw the setup page when he was here, but didn't know what it was. I guess I'll have to call them to get the IP?

3. Its literally something like: http://192.168.100.1
Try that. See if you navigate to a login page.

What is the Brand/Model number of the cable modem?

If I didn't clear my cache so often, I would just find it.

That URL gives me:
Residential Gateway (Firefox Tab designation)

Cable Modem Information
Cable Modem : DOCSIS 1.0/1.1/2.0 Compliant

Boot Code Version : 2.1.7d
Software Version : 6.01.1012

Even though it says< "login", the only clickable on the page is the header and leads to :
http://www.ambitbroadband.com/na/

There is no brand marking on it. It's called an MTA and has about nine MACs on it, for phone, cable, wireless, and ethernet. Time Warner.

edit: The MAC that is already programed into my Linksys doesn't match the above. I didn't compare it with any of the other MACs on the MTA. But, as mentioned, the logon function is not enabled on that page. Would I have to use IE?

5. That's it!
Yes, have to use IE. That happens sometimes. Stick with me, if you will, and let me see how I do?

6. Okay..
I need further assistance here. I'm on the "wireless" tab and

Wireless

•Basic

•Security

•Access Control

•Guest Network

Basic :
This page allows configuration of the Access Point parameters, including the SSID and channel number.

Security :
This page allows configuration of the WEP keys and/or passphrase.

Access Control:
This page allows configuration of the Access Control to the AP as well as status on the connected clients.

** I took a brief wireless class that was taught very poorly. So, instead of my usual confidence in these matters, I'm cautious. They won't come out today, and if I botch it... all weekend.

7. I got the channel changed.

Do I just want to disable WEP? I did try doing research on this before I asked, but I'm still in the dark.

Thanks so much for your assistance.

update: changing the channel got me from a 29% signal to 44%. The installer told me it didn't matter, but I don't believe him. I want to remove the WEP because I like to close down internet connection when I play games. The wireless adapter has a "connect" function, but if I don't know how to use the security, I might not be able to get back on.

When I used this adapter on a DSL modem, I was never instructed to set up WEP. It was only configured to the MAC.

8. You should see the option to select WPA rather than WEP.
Select WPA and set a password for that puppy.

10. lol...
That's funny. That's exactly what the installer did. Asked for the dogs' names and used them in the code :D

12. Hi Syzygy.
I live in western NC, near Asheville.

Ok. WPA keys, go with AES and use a long/strong password.

A little info-
http://compnetworking.about.com/b/2008/08/21/aes-vs-tkip-for-wireless-encryption.htm

Sorry for the delay. I was offline most of the weekend doing family stuff.

13. Hi, paparush .
I figured you were out having fun! Thanks for getting back to me.

You've given me some great resources. I went to work in dial up support in 1998, moved up with cable and dsl, and have always been able to do all that *stuff*. It was frustrating not knowing anything about wifi. I just caught up!

I have friends in Smithfield, Asheville and Charlotte! :hi:
