I have someone who has created an imposter email account for me
Edited on Tue Dec-09-08 02:30 PM by truedelphi
I recently took a job in sales.

I have a corporate email account set up by my boss.

Let's say that that email addr is

Me@CorporateAddr.com

Someone has created a new "me" and their address is Me@CorporateAddx.com

They put out broadcasts of things that I want to buy and/or sell on websites, and if anyone responds, it goes to that email address and not mine.

Is there anyway I can send the imposter an email and then trace to see to where it goes??
Any help appreciated.

(And special thanks to "H" here who helped me with several computer problems before I got a star and could post here.)

2. Could you clarify a couple of things please?
I am trying to get my head around the circumstances:)

This is a work email account. Are the things you are buying and selling to do with work or personal? From your OP it seems that the impostor would not even have the goods for sale, or any intent to buy anything, making the fraudulent email more of a nuisance than an attempt to scam.....

If it is work related, do you have IT people you can pass the buck to? Just trying to understand what is going on.

4. I am an indiependent contractor. I have a boss and what not, but

This is not related so much to my email account being hexed by someone, as someone noticing my posts on various electronic bill boards (catalogs, actually.) Places where "Want to Buy" and "Want to Sell" offers are posted.

And those places are not to blame.

I am actually thinking that what may have happened is this:
I typed out a want to sell offer, and mis-typed my email user name. So the misspelling of my email address was initially my fault. But that misspelling was "picked up" by whoever owns the place where it is being seen now.

Sort of like if you had sent your reply to this topic, here, but it went to a different though similiar blog, (democraticthunderground, a place you had never heard of) and ended up with almost your userid on DU. (Canxtoad, rather than canetoad) If that makes any sense.

3. Contact the ISP that owns
the IP Address(es) for where the MX (Mail eXchanger) record is hosted. Chances are that it is offshore, like in China or Nigeria.. but it's worth a shot.

6. No, you did it correctly
someone just changed their from address with a nonexistent address. You'd have to look at the emails header information to trace back the address that originated the message, then perform an ARIN look up on the IP address.

8. Update - I think the person who owns the BBS is actually the one doing this to me
Bear in mind that one of the things that is fishey about this is that for anyone to be on this BBS site - they have to pay $ 49.95 a month.

Since I didn't even know of the existence of this site for the past two months when my impostor has been on, it could not be me paying the bill - that I would have noticed.

Anyway, I signed up as of ten days ago. As a new subscriber, I am eligible for a full two weeks as a member for free. I decide to place some of my For Sale electronic components on the Fos Sale part of the BBS.

Low and behold, three days later I got an email from the site's owner, who stated that I had no right to post on his site, until I signed up!!

He has no phone where I can reach him - only an email addres and he never responds. He does have a fax line, but when I fax in my complaint, the line switches to voice communication, so then I call, but the line is switched over to fax ability only!!
