In Windows, is "IE" the generic term for Browser?

In Windows, is "IE" the generic term for Browser?
Somehow this just occurred to me. When I see "IE" I take it literally as Internet Explorer (as in reg keys). But since I use Firefox, do these keys apply to Firefox since it's my default browser?

Also, for example with SpybotS&D - it has an option to "protect IE settings" - again, is this specific to IE, or any browser?
