Wireless security help please...
Techno-impaired BHN needs help please.

My daughter told me she thinks the reason our mac
is running so slow sometimes is that someone
is riding our 2wire ATT wireless connection.

She said we need to set a wireless access password.

She may as well be speaking Russian.

Can anyone enlighten me as to how I secure our
wireless connection?

Sometimes the mac internet connection runs SO slow.
She says it may be because our wireless is not secure.

Help?
In English please?
I truly don't know much about how it all works.
BHN

1. Hard to do this here. Did you try ATT tech support?
I think their main number is 1-800-244-4444. Or maybe you got a setup CD from ATT?

At some point, you will need to get to the web based control panel by typing into your web browser the IP address for the router, which is different depending on the model. It may be 192.168.1.254 or 172.16.1.1 or 172.16.0.1 or maybe something else.

There you can setup a password for the router, which you will also need to use on the computer that connects wirelessly.

But it can get confusing, so I'd suggesting getting ahold of tech support for ATT. They do this all the time, and should be open since it's daytime in India.

3. most wireless routers in my experience can be reached at 192.168.1.1
Of course you will need the default password to set a new password on the router. The defaults are usually a user name like "admin" and the password "password" or something similar. You should find the defaults in your manuals for your router.

4. I think you mean 192.168.0.1
Rather than .... 1.1--that's the address of my router, anyway. :hi:

5. could be
I've had 3 different routers and all of them were 1.1 but as I understand it 0.1 is another address that can be used and the manufacuer will give you the address in the literature that comes with it.
