Help?
I have a second computer hooked to this one by a "direct cable to cable connection". I have internet through the cable. Can I get internet on the second one through this one's connection? And how? I've tried the sharing setup. Thanks in advance. :hi:

1. I think so...
You have more than one network plug on your PC apparently. If so, I think this will work...

Go to the Star Menu and select Control Panel -> Network Connections.

From the menu bar select File -> New Connection.

Click Next and then select Set Up A Home or Small Office Network.

Click Next, Finish, Next, Next.

Select the first option, "This computer connects directly to the internet. The other computers on my network connect to the internet through this computer."

Click Next, then select the network card that is supplying the connection.

Click Next, and Finish.

The last step I'm not sure about since I don't have this network setup here. I've never done it this way before. Hope this helps.

3. Are the workgroup names the same?
I really don't know, but maybe they both have to be on the same Workgroup.

Why not just connect the other PC straight to the router? This way, the first PC doesn't have to be on.

Edited on Mon May-12-08 12:50 AM by wildbilln864
Just the cable modem connected to computer A. Computer B connected to A through direct parallel cable connection. I can access everything(files) by sharing C: Just wondered if I could also access internet too.
I thought I could use the direct cable to cable to access internet. Maybe not.
And yes, workgroups are same. :hi:

5. You can share a cable modem
I do it often when I bring a work computer home. On your first computer open network connections, right click on your cable connection and select properties. Then in the advanced tab tick 'Allow other computers to connect to the internet through this computer's connection'.

After that, do the network setup as djohnston described and you should be good to go.

7. I have windows mellinium(siq)...
I can go to network in control panel but don't see network connections. On desktop I have "my network places". I can't find the cable connection. Sorry but I'm ignorant about such stuff.

6. Did you try the Internet Connection Sharing Troubleshooter?
Edited on Mon May-12-08 10:56 AM by BattyDem
It's in the Windows XP help file.

Click Start, click Help and Support, search for "Internet Connection Sharing Troubleshooter"

It sounds like you did everything right, but there's probably one setting somewhere that you missed. The troubleshooter should help you find it.

Good luck! :hi:

ON EDIT: Just thought of something. The second computer needs to be set up to obtain an IP address automatically.

ON EDIT #2: I did a quick Google and found a web site that has step-by-step instructions. I don't know how advanced your computer knowledge is, so it might seem a little basic, but it's very detailed. Read through it. You may find the step/setting you missed.

9. The link I gave you has instructions for Win98/ME
Here's the direct link to the Win98/ME instructions
http://www.homenethelp.com/ics/ics-install-net98.asp

Since you have no problem accessing the files, it leads me to believe that the network setup is fine - it's just an ICS setting that's incorrect. Take a look at the web site. It goes through the process step by step. It may seem silly, especially if you have more advanced knowledge, but you may discover something you missed.

Good luck! :hi:

10. your best bet is a fairly cheap router
hook it to your cable connection, and then ethernet the the other two via ethernet cable (or wireless --assuming you have a wireless router and wireless cards).

The great thing about that is the router stays logged in and all you have to do is turn on your PC---you can kill all the isp software, and you won't need both PC's on to use the second one.

16. Okay I bought....
a wired Fast Ethernet 10/100 5-port hub. Do I still need a router? And a wired Network Card and two cables. Ran the networking wizard on both computers and still only have internet on one at a time if the other is powered off. :argh:

17. Unfortunately, probably yes.
you might see if you can get both to connect under separate logins, but the hub itself doesn;t have the built-in controls to really do it right. If you can take the hub back for a refund and get a router, you'd be better off as the router will work as a hub to connect the two PCs together, but add the necessary piece to more effectively share the connection.

Try loading your isp software on the second and use it to login separately with the same account name and password... It MIGHT work.
