F3 bring up the 'Search' window.
OK, when I'm on my desktop or if I don't have a selected 'active' window, if I hit F3 it pulls up the 'Search Results' window.

I want to disable that because I usually hit it accidentally when I'm in another application and it slows me down while my computer waits for the window to pop up. Is there a way to disable it?

1. it means messing with the registry

and possibly creating a new key if one doesn't already exist. I'm not happy about trying to talk you through it here in case anything goes wrong. Ask a tekkie friend to do it - it can be done.

edit: I hope I don't sound unhelpful. But, the registry is powerful voodoo...one mistake and you could have big problems.

2. "search window" linked to Firefox browser
i'm using the Firefox browser (on Windows XP) ... if i have an "active" browser window, f3 move the cursor to the "Find" box ...

if I have no "active" window, e.g. i'm on my desktop, F3 does NOT open a search window ...

perhaps this combination, Firefox and XP would resolve your problem ...

3. Interesting! F3 brings up the search only when I'm at Desktop
In Corel PhotoPaint, F3 doesn't do anything. In Eudora, F3 doesn't do anything.

In my Opera browser, F3 brings up Opera's "Find."

Which OS do you have, and in which application does F3 bring up the Search window?

I agree with the first poster that I wouldn't mess with the Registry . . .

4. You can download a program to re-map your keyboard..
here is one called Key Tweak which is freeware. It has an option to disable a key altogether. It changes the registry entry for you. (You don't need to run the program again once you make a change.)
