2. I honestly didn't know CS was still around.

Did the CS Rep say his name was "Bob" and speak

with an accent that made him hard to understand?

7. And that is precisely why, like, NOBODY uses CompuServe...
On the IT order of species, it's even below AOL.

8. It's part of AOL.
The "About Compuserve" link sounds like the brand is for sale, it says everything but "Make Offer!"

(They could probably get about $12 for it on eBay.)

I once worked for an IT company on the verge of extinction. There were only a handful of people working in a place that had once employed thousands. Most of the work was defense and I suppose the place was kept just barely alive in case the Russians attacked.

Nobody ate lunch in the cafeteria because it was the most depressing place in the building. The kitchen was closed, and the tables were covered with dust and old files and papers and other stuff that had been left there to die.

The whole place was full of flickering fluorescent lights, because there wasn't anybody to replace them. There were plenty of lamps in storage though, so if you wanted to claim some place and make it habitable you could replace the lights in the ceiling yourself.

If people didn't like where they were, they just moved, rewiring the phone lines themselves.

A few years after I left they just tore it all down and didn't salvage out anything, probably because there wasn't anyone left who had the slightest idea what the security status of anything was, or maybe because everything valuable had already been stolen.
