Some questions about ubuntu and firefox
I have finally installed ubuntu and have a couple questions, thanks in advance for any info and suggestions
Does ubuntu have any need for a defragmenter
Is there anything like a DOS window in xp
Is there anything like a registry in ubuntu and if so does it need any user input, cleanup etc.
Is there anyway to not have to type in a name and password when I log on as I don't need that feature and it bugs me

In firefox how do I turn off the underlines on the text

Any suggestions anyone has that would make my transformation to the linux world more pleasant is greatly appreciated and encouraged by me. :-)

1. Some answers ...

Defragmenter: No. The file systems native to Linux work differently and do not become "fragmented" the way Windows's file systems do.

DOS Window: That would be a terminal. Look for something call XTerm

Registry: Not as such, certainly not *the* registry.

Name/Pass: Yes, but I'll have to look up how to do it. It breaks one of the basic rules of security to do this, so it's not generally something distros give you an option to do out in the open.

Firefox: Can't remember at the moment and am at work. I'll look it up later and report back if no one else has chimed in.

3. Underline ...

Do you mean underlined links? If so ...

You'll note the "options" is in a different place on Linux's version of Firefox. Why? I have no idea. Well, yes I do. It has to do with maintaining consistency among standards for apps under the OS being used. Anyway, it's under Edit > Preferences.

From there, open Content > Colors, and there should be a radio button to check and uncheck for underlined links.

4. Auto-Login ...

Follow this link, and it provides an answer to your question about getting rid of the need for a password:

http://www.watchingthenet.com/how-to-enable-automati-logon-in-ubuntu-or-kubuntu.html

I could give you different instructions, but since this is tailored to Ubuntu, I figure this should be easier than typing it all out.

OnEdit: And I find I must retract the comment about distros not generally giving you an option to do this. Apparently SuSE, as one example, *defaults* to it. One more reason I'm becoming increasingly irritated with Novell. Ah, well ... I understand why some people don't like it and how in certain environments it wouldn't be a security risk of all that great a degree, but still. It shouldn't be a *default* for pity's sake.

5. thanks for all the help
now its just a matter of taking the time to get comfortable with ubuntu and its seeming to be somewhat slower than my xp system with SP3 rc1 loaded and I'm sure its something I can do on my end to fix that, now to find what that causes is.
