Anyone try MEPIS?
It's a version of Debian (of apt-get fame) that runs off of a CD, but unlike Knoppix, has the option of creating a parition, etc., installing onto the hard drive.

I'm thinking this is just a flat out great way to 'demo' Linux to those who think that it would be a total impossiblity for them to use it themselves.

1. Knoppix can also be installed onto a hard drive

That being said, I've never tried Mepis but many people really like it. There's such an embarassment of riches these days with Linux distributions that there's pretty much something for everyone.

As an aside, Mepis had my vote for 'Worst Distro Name, Ever' until the recent merging of Mandrake and Connectiva into Mandriva. :-)

3. MY HP Notebook experiences with MEPHIS
I'm currently clearing out 4 GB's of space off of my HP notebook, because, with a 766Mhz processor and 126 Megs of ram, running MEPHIS was EXCRUCIATINGLY SLOW. I'm talking USELESS slow. It didn't offically HANG, but what's the difference when you come back from dinner and it still hasn't launched the "configure k-weather" applet yet?

It didn't recognize my netgear 802.11g PC card, but for the record it found the notebook's mousepad, sound card and built-in NIC (for wired access) no problem.

One question about MEPHIS over KNOPPLIX, does Knopplix support anything like apt-getas MEPHIS does?

PS: the last way I'd choose a distro is by the name.
