1. Other.
I'm afraid I still use a pathetic old XWindows window manager (olvwm).

When running in Linux I tended to prefer KDE, even though Gnome is
cooler, but I have no running Linux machines right now, so I might
change my mind if I looked at the question again.

4. fluxbox
I use both GNOME and KDE apps. No real preference for either at this time. It's all copasetic.

5. My company standardizes on KDE but I use GNOME
The version in FC3 (2.8 plus Red Hat customizations) kicks ass with extreme prejudice.

I also use KDE 3.3 in FC3. Both are very nice.

8. IceWM
Customized by Libranet. It's fuckin' gorgeous with the nautilus integration. And faster than all hell without it. Who needs desktop froo-froo anyway? I want apps to open fast, not have something pretty to look at while I wait on stuff.

16. I use IceWM too
Whenever I get a faster machine with more memory, I might take another look at Gnome... in fact I used it for a long time. But on my k6-II 450, with 128 megs, IceWM works much better.

12. How much trouble am I in ..
If I say Windows? Seriously, I love Linux/FreeBSD for servers, but I have yet to find a desktop that I can use on a regular basis, and none that I could feel comfortale hading to family or friends.

Frankly, the inabality of the open source crowd to produce a top notch desktop as viewed form the user perspective is probably open source's biggest failure. It is disappointing that it took Apple to put a truly user friendly, easy to use and install desktop on an open source system.

13. Why would you be in trouble? Why would you care? :)
Use what you like. I heartily disagree with your opinion (as a matter of fact, I honestly dislike the Windows desktop, and most of the apps, but that's why there are choices.

14. It was tongue in cheek
:)

I prefer the windows desktop for ease of use, and for the fact that the things I do on a desktop -- web browse, write, email, or play games -- seem to work out of the box better on Windows. And there is something about the text display on Unix browsers that drives me up the wall. It never seems to look correct to me.

17. that used to be true about fonts under Linux and Unix in general
And it would take a lot of tweaking with the font setup to get things to work properly. But I think most of the distributions have fixed that by now.

But I'm no snob. If you prefer Windows, that is what you should use. :)

18. Really. That is what people tend to forget. There are SOME
things windows is good at, some things Macs are good at, and some things only Linux is good at.

Shit, I don't care if you like GeoWorks, OS2, or the Dos5 Shell... if it does what you want, that is what is important.

Who cares what other people think of your choices?

19. It's mostly
the web browser fonts. Something about etscape and Mozilla on Linux just doesn't look right to me. Course, its been about a year since I tried a Linux desktop, so I may be behind the times.

21. See, there's your problem.
Mozilla and Netscape did not use XFT support which helps the fonts in many distributions. They have since started that. Also, just tweak your browsers' fonts to all "Sans" or "Sans Serif" and hit and you're in business.

23. Well, I use the Microsoft TT Web Fonts...
In my browser and I think that most people would find a Linux Desktop quite pleasing with them, especially if they just came from Windows.

I use XFT and sub-pixel hinting and the fonts are as sharp as straight razors.
