Wireshark is a packet sniffer similar to Capsa for Windows. It's a really good piece of software- it lets you see all the IP addresses that connect to your computer, and allows you to view the contents of the transferred data per connection, in both hex and plain text. I'm sure it does more, such as capturing the packets, but I just started using it.

If you're concerned about hosts trying to connect to your system, though, this application works really well.

Just a heads-up.

2. I've used Wireshark for many years...
and Ethereal before that (Wireshark forked the code for independent development). Hands down, the best packet sniffer I've ever used.

If you are running Aruba Networks APs it allows you to remotely capture packets from all your APs and analyze them on the remote workstation. If you want to capture wireless traffic for programs such as aircrack-ng by putting your WiFi adapter in promiscuous-mode, you'll want to install the WinPcap driver (may only be needed for Windoze). For those not familiar with the Network OSI model, be prepared for a steep learning curve.

3. And Firestarter!
Firestarter makes it easy to configure a firewall that makes you completely invisible to evildoers.
