It's time once again for the yearly Green Tomato Thread
Edited on Mon Oct-24-11 01:04 PM by The empressof all
It's a tradition for me to make a big vat of the mincemeat when I pull the last of the plants. I had a small crop this year as we had cooler than normal weather in PNW. I have about a gallon of greenies that I was able to salvage. So this means I'm off to the grocer for apples, raisins and candied ginger to make the Green Tomato Mincemeat. The house will smell great this afternoon as it bubbles in the little Nesco. SO has begged to make a few cakes as well and not waste them all in cookies.

Here's a recipe for the cake

And here's just one of the mincemeat recipes....I really like this one but I do admit to adding a jigger of booze.

1. All those years I had a garden and so many green tomatoes, and I never
once made green tomato mincemeat. I kept thinking of it and never did it. Sigh.

I LOVE oddball stuff like that, too.

2. hmm.....I have about half a gallon of them
Mostly cherry toms. I already have some frozen for enchilada sauce. Maybe this would be a good use for them, as they don't seem to be ripening. I have apples, and raisins. No candied ginger. Added to the shopping list now.

3. Thank you for the recipe links. Can you bottle the cooking smell and send one along too?
I'm adding the cake to my "you must try this" list. :)

6. Fried green tomatoes breaded with Italian bread crumbs
Fried in olive oil. Sprinkle with extra dried oregano as they fry in the pan. So good.
