Stromboli - crowd pleaser and easy to make
I just returned from an extensive road trip from Los Angeles to Maine and back, making stops at the homes of many friends and family. When I wanted to cook in as a treat to the hosts/hostesses, I made a Stromboli.

The ingredients are simple and you can make it to fit the desires or requirements of any group of guests, including children, vegetarians or those keeping kosher. It is basically a pizza rolled up and sealed, but better, imo.

Here is my favorite:

Pizza dough
Pesto Sauce
Roasted Red Peppers
Pepperoni
Mozzarella Cheese, shredded

Spread the dough onto a cookie sheet
Layer all your ingredients
Roll it up and tightly seal the top and edges using a beaten egg.
Put the seam side down and brush the whole thing with remaining egg.
Bake at 375 for about 20 to 25 minutes (until browned nicely).
You can put some additional cheese on top during the last five minutes or so.

Once out of the oven, let stand for about 5 minutes, then slice.
I serve mine on top of some red sauce.

1. I just made this the other night

Actually I made a vegan version with eggplant, red peppers, basil sliced tomatoes, onions, garlic and white beans.

I also made death on a plate with two kinds of salami, mortadella, cappacolla, onions, roasted red peppers, Provolone and mozz.

I make mine like a pregnant pizza. Just layer the toppings on one side and fold the dough over and crimp.

2. Thanks for inspiring me cbayer!
From the minute I read your post I simply had to try making one! and... Just made my first stromboli - pepperoni and mozzarella with basil and oregano. Yum! Just had a slice... Think I'll try ham and provolone next. Or maybe one with pesto and veggies... :)

3. Wow! Is that picture of your actual stromboli? Quite impressive for a first go.
Now I think I am going to have to make one tonight.

Extra added bonus - leftovers keep and heat up very well.

:hi:

4. yep that's the actual one I made
Beginner's luck!

This is going to be fun!

I did a basic pizza dough

2 cups flour
1.5 cups water plus 2 tbsp
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp instant yeast

I did a little research online and found this nicely detailed page of instructions

By the way, What are these "leftovers" of which you speak??? :)

Thanks again!
