Stove thoughts - last minute - Vulcan commercial 10 burner
Edited on Fri Oct-29-10 04:31 PM by mtnester
I will have an opportunity to bid on this tomorrow: (it won't generate a pic, you will have to click..it is safe)

I have done some google searches, but not knowing the exact model cannot really compare.

What are my auction price points do you think? i.e. what would be a steal, what would be a bargain, what would be probable, and what would be way too high?

1. I hate to be a downer, but even if it is free, you'll pay too much
Commercial ranges are completely and totally not built for home use. They absolutely need a commercial exhaust system (min $5,000) and that means they need a commercial fire suppression system (min $4,000). They burn far to hot to be within six inches of a combustible material (like your walls!) If you put in the proper hood, you need to also put in a make-up air system (about $2,000). All told, while cooking, you will be sucking out a roomful of air every few minutes, air you paid dearly to heat and cool ($???). You'll also have to pay your homeowners insurance more money due to the higher risk of fire ($???).

I know that sounds harsh, but I have seen too many people try to coexist with one of these beasts (and that one is a medium duty commercial!) and later regret it. Unless you're cooking regularly for 20 or 50 or more, look for a nice Viking ($) or DCS ($$) or some such. You'll be **much** happier.

Honest!

I will pass and let the restaurant people have it! They are also auctioning off the hood, etc, but I will take your sound advice.

4. Thank you, Stinky
The only home kitchen that should have one of those monsters is the home kitchen that no one ever actually dirties with food. This thing belongs in a large commercial kitchen, and I do mean large.

If the OP really needs those 10 hobs, two 36 inch home ranges installed side by side will do the same thing with much greater safety.

(Anyway, who needs 10? Why not have a burner/flat top combination)

3. ah, but its fun to dream - isn't it?

list is almost 8k all by itself
used maybe half that price
with all the special (and costly) fittings
it probably isn't worth it to you...

but it sure is fun to dream ;)

5. I will now have to proceed directly to the Great Indoors to salivate over
cooktops and refrigerators.

It was pretty though.....

I did not go to the auction...but I will find out Monday how much it went for and who got it.

6. Remember, Stinky was right. FREE was too expensive!
Were I in the type of neighborhood to install a trophy kitchen, this would be it: http://www.thermador.com/cooking/ranges/prd364edg-professional-series-36-inch-dualfuel-commercialdepth-range-stainless-steel They also have cooktops, although I prefer the Bosch esthetics.

Since this is a hardscrabble, working class neighborhood, I'll end up with a decent range that will do the job if I stay here.
