I am officially in love with Alton Brown.
A cooking program that appeals to my geek-science background. He builds things. He makes sense. He's environmentally sustainable (take that, Paula Deen....) He knows how to make gyros.

The tragedy is that I missed him entirely while in Indiana, because he conflicted with CSI-Law&Order-Something like that that my grandmother loved.

So I'm a late convert.

1. My kids LOVE Alton Brown.
They ask to watch his show all the time and they are only 2 and 4. I enjoy it, too, so we sometimes watch together.

2. I love Alton Brown for the same reasons I can't stand Emeril
Other favorites are Rachel Ray, Jamie Oliver, and whoever the Barefoot Contessa is. They all do common sense, real life, unfancy, and wonderful food. They're less into theatrics and more into mechanics and theory. They don't do "tall" food. (No wonder so many celebs and rich people are so skinny, they can't figure out how to eat those edifices.)

11. Barefoot Contessa is Ina Garten

I want to be her, and do what she does, and live where she lives...sigh

Her cookbooks are nice too. Some of my favorites

6. Yep, that's me...
It's a politically oriented blog, normally, but I veer to the personal on occasion.

Thanks!

8. I thought it was a great picture, too
but I wanted to make sure it was you before I said so

You have a wonderful smile - it embraces the world and showers everyone in sight with its love. Your family and fried are truly lucky and blessed to be able to share in its magic every day.

7. Thanks...
The question was actually a result of an ongoing crusade I've had, since the local tv news went bonkers about the arrival of Cheesecake Factory.

9. I love Alton Brown.
He is quirky but he gives such great tips. I also like Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa) and Michael Chiarello.

10. Alton Brown ...... one of the smartest food guys on teevee
He's a cross between your very favorite science teacher and your favorite aunt. He cares about you and he wants you to learn. His shows ought to be required viewing in HS home ec (or whateverthehell they call it these days) class.

12. Heh... life skills.... I've a friend showing some of his shows in SCIENCE.
He teaches high school science at a difficult school. He's using several Good Eats episodes to teach scientific method. (He teaches something called Earth science using the cave man science methodology, where the kids start out with the basic principle of fire and work up from there.)

I used to never have time for cooking shows; then I got turned off on my grandmother's overdosing. Now I'm taping.

I still don't like the rest of the lineup on Foodtv, but that's over exposure, I'm sure. Though I will never, ever like Paula Deen. (And Ms. Contessa is too snobby for my blood. I'm sure she'd sneer at the fact that I have in fact lived in *gasp, Horror, shock* a mobile home.)

13. Alton is the best
I'll watch him before any of the others. It's great that I actually learn something from every show.

14. I like his show, but...
It's best to have the TiVo or VCR going because he goes so fast.

And on DU, I'm happy to see praise for any southerner, especially a southern white male. ;)

15. Alton Brown is wonderful! Although I'm mostly a Tony Bourdain (Cook's
Tour) gal — BTW, Bourdain will have a new show on the Travel Channel starting 4Q this year.

Here's AB's fantastic website:

His show is a hoot! He's the Mr. Wizard of Food! (and he's probably old enough to remember Mr. Wizard)

Edited on Tue May-03-05 07:11 AM by MemphisTiger
he is great. He not only tells you how to cook something, but why it cooks the way it does. What happened to Jamie Oliver "The Naked Chef"?

18. I think I can answer that
I often listen to BBC radio. Jamie Oliver has been working on his new cause -- to improve school lunches for British kids. I don't know if his show is on hiatus or not, but I wish him luck with this.

20. DH watched the Lemon Meringue Pie show with me last night
And drooled through it. He's got a thing for lemon meringue pie, too....

So I just ordered some Meyer's lemons and I'm about to break down and buy the Kitchenaid stand mixer, since I can no longer stand to beat the whites..... (bloody knees....)

21. Haven't seen that one yet.
I'm not a lemon meringue fan though!

How about the one where he is supposedly stranded on a deserted island? That one was just plain funny, but I REALLY want to try the sweet-n-sour pork recipe he had on it.

22. For a funny one .... did you see the one about garlic?
Its from a few years ago ... he's explaining to this guy named "Vlad" why garlic is good and how to handle it.

Hugely funny.

23. Chocolate meringue is pretty good, too!
As is vanilla meringue, strawberry cream meringue, peach custard meringue, orange meringue, etc....

Now, if you're not a fan of meringue, there might be a bit more of a problem.
