Electric perk coffee pot
Over a month ago we got a Farberware Superfast electric perk and we're enjoying the coffee a lot. Hubby complained that our auto drip coffee wasn't hot enough nor did it have a full flavor. His folks used to use an electric perk when they had company and it made a great cup of coffee so we decided to switch.

So far I'm happy with it. The basket and post can go in the dishwasher for cleanup. I use a filter that folds over so we can grind the beans finer and still not have any problem with grounds in the cup.

This is about as fiddly as I'd want to get. We're not into French presses making one cup at a time. Being pretty basic coffee drinkers we want to make 10 or 12 cups in the morning and have the hot pot on the counter until we're finished with it.

We use Boyers Morning Blend beans for a cup of coffee that's mild but still full flavored to the last cup.

Maybe Ruhlman was right.

There are larger French presses than one cuppers.

I see your point about wanting a large supply of hot coffee at the ready, though. So it's nice that there are so many options available for all our different coffee quirks, eh? Good for you!

A family member is a social media consultant to the coffee industry and I've been reading the trade magazines with all the latest trends. The latest in specialty drinks is single source one cup "pourover" brewing. Pourover meaning a single cup drip cone. Single source meaning that the beans come from one farm, one grove of trees somewhere in the world, and that source is identified. A coffee shop of this kind will have a row of cones and paper filters where they brew each cup to order for a customer.

Stumptown Coffee in Portland has a shop where they only offer tastings or cuppings of their coffees to educate the palates of customers.

We regular folks have little idea of how complex and specialized the coffee and tea industries are fast becoming. Sort of like the wine industry has been over the last forty years or so.

I do enjoy trying different brands and coffee from different countries, though. Before Eight O'Clock brand was sold here I ordered a number of their varieties. Growing up, we were always a "red bag" family. But I enjoyed some of the different beans they sell.

Btw, I heard that perked coffee is supposed to produce more caffeine. But I don't know about that since I had a cup at 9:30 last night and still got to sleep easily.

2. My mother used instant coffee in her electric perk coffeemaker
and her guests always raved about how great her coffee was.

All coffee tastes like battery acid to me, so I can't vouch for her method.

It's just something to consider if you run out of real coffee some day.

3. I think we did this while camping years ago
If I recall right we ran out of regular coffee and brewed some instant in the stove top coffee pot. But I don't remember the verdict. Since we never did it again I guess we didn't like it all that much.

Battery acid, huh? To each his own.

5. Perked coffee is hotter than drip.
It's easier to get more acidic and off tasting coffee in percolators too by letting it perk too long, but properly brewed it's not bad and easier to clean than a French press. I like coffee made in a French press the best but I use a drip maker most of the time for convenience.

I've never had a press that made less than two mugs of coffee with a little extra, but that may be because I bought them years ago before they were fashionable. They were the way that my favorite coffee shop brewed coffee (The Coffee Connection in the Boston area.)

6. I have one of the glass percolators you use on the stove
still refining things like perk time and all, but it's not bad, especially for one person. And it was cheap!
