Is this yum, or yuck?
At the Eagles Lodge Twilight Rummage Sale, I picked up a community cookbook from Butte County California. One of the proud residents contributed a recipe called "Peanut-Onion Puff."

Just to give you the quick version:

Blanch 4 large onions that have been sliced into rings. Layer in a casserole with shredded cheese and chopped salted roasted peanuts. Over the top, pour a mixture of flour, milk, eggs and salt. Bake for 40 minutes.

Now, that sounds just horrible to me. Just plain AWFUL.

What say you?

1. Oh. My. God.
As if the idea of onion and peanuts was not bad enough, they had to add melted cheese and an egg concoction.

Yuck, yuck, yuck.

2. Onion and peanuts coexist happily in Asian cuisines
I agree that one sounds a little weird, but the fundamental combination is not weird.

3. Onion and peanut (or walnut or pecan) is one of those basic combos
in both vegetarian and Asian cuisines. That part isn't the problem. The cheese isn't the problem, as it goes along well with nuts and onions.

It's the custard that kind of sticks in the back of my throat.

I'd much rather use the combination of nuts, cheese and onion in burgers and loaves.

4. That sounds so gross it's almost worth making as an experiment.
The only thing missing is a cup of Bisquick or a can of condensed soup.

5. Something I've noticed about this type of cookbook is that some of the recipes
submitted seem to be an effort by some contributors to have the most unusual or outrageous recipe in the book. Others appear to be trying to impress others with their culinary skills.

That being said, this one is just intriguing enough for me to give it a try just for the helluvit. Can you post the entire recipe?

6. Someone's GOT to try it...
it may as well be you.

My first thought is yuck. However, I have been proven wrong many times over. And I'm never afriad to at least taste something.

Go for it!

7. sounds really nasty
The ingredients don't sound all that appealing and the texture would be pretty disgusting as well. Way too salty, too.

Of course, I'm partial to Asian dishes, being from Hawaii - and they use plenty of Onions and Peanuts in cooking...

Especially Thai and Vietnamese dishes...

10. I really have no problem
with the onions and the peanuts together. It's all the rest of it mixed in that makes me think yuck.

11. Years ago I thought mixing peanut butter and pasta would be yuckie
Edited on Sun Jul-26-09 08:08 PM by The empressof all
I think this could be one of those things that you just have to try to really see what it's like. It could be nothing more than a peanut quiche which might not be that bad...It actually sounds like a version of a bisquick "impossible" pie.

Hey I'm gonna make spagehetti squash nut pie from this years harvest and I'm always good with the green tomato cake.

14. My theory on recipes is...
Edited on Mon Jul-27-09 05:46 PM by hippywife
if you've been cooking long enough and as much and as varied as most of us all do, then you can look at the list of ingredients on a recipe and pretty much taste the finished product without ever making it. Don't you? :hi:

Edited for spelling.

15. In theory...I should agree with your theory...
But my experience has taught me otherwise. I honestly think there are several foods that if described to me would get an immediate thumbs down. Raw Oysters, Caviar Omelette's and Pasta with Peanut Sauce could all make me lean towards the gag reflex. Yet I love them all. Things that I "should" like I just don't. I love mushrooms but Shitaki's ruin any dish for me. I love herby things but Cilantro is a deal breaker for me. Sometimes ya just gotta try it to "get it". When I was pregnant, my favorite treat was Sarah lee pound cake with a schmear of peanut butter and a half a glass of orange juice poured over it. I know...go figure....but I'm still carrying some of those pounds of culinary nirvana around 19 years later.

16. I guess what I'm talking about mostly
are recipes that you already know what each of the individual ingredients taste like, rather than having someone describe to you things you've never tasted before. Sorry I wasn't really clear on that. :D

18. you are sooo right...

In fact, sometimes when I think I'm hungry I can just read a cook book and enjoy the "taste" of each recipe. I don't have to have made the dish before, just knowing how things taste alone and in conjunction with others is all this old memory needs.

Now peanut butter and pasta WAS a surprise tho'...

19. See, now that didn't surprise me
in the least. I'd already had Thai food with peanut sauce and knew that it would taste great on pasta, too.

Looking through a cookbook when I'm hungry just kills me. You have one really strong constitution.

17. I say I might try it and see what happens. Each of...
those ingredients is just fine with most of the others, and this thing looks like it might end up as some sort of bizarre popover.

(Can't be any worse than some of the horrid Paula Deen things I tried that should have tasted good, based on the ingredients.)
