Let us bow our heads in remembrance of foods lost or irrevocably altered
My husband and I have always loved Cadbury Fruit and Nut bars. I think that Cadbury was sold a few years ago to someone I can't recall - Hershey? not sure. Anyway, it is different. Similar, but not as good and different. The chocolate is grayer, waxier, less creamy. Buy them occasionally and then remember why I stopped.

I also used to buy Oregon Farms carrot cake (frozen). Loved it! Then the company was bought by Sara Lee (as I recall), new boxes, but seemed the same, and then, now, GONE! Nowhere to be found. Why buy a great product in order to kill it off? My only theory is that now I am wondering if Sara Lee owns Claim Jumper which is now the only frozen carrot cake.

We also enjoyed an inhouse brand of Kroger Salsa - black corn and bean salsa. Bought it all the time. One day it was different. Different taste, different texture, even a slightly different bottle with a wider lip - just not as good. Went from tasting very fresh to tasting very processsed. Stopped buying. Do they think we don't notice? Do they think we don't care?

1. The thing that we lament is the 'lost' food items sold by Costco and then no longer carried
They carried a frozen pizza that was made in British Columbia someplace. It was INCREDIBLE. The best frozen I have evr tasted and among the tops of **any** origin.

Now .......... they no longer carry it.

3. I have that problem with them, too
I get hooked on something really, really good and find out they only ordered a truckload of the stuff as a fluke.

I'll be weeping for the vegetarian spring rolls. They really are quite good and I know they won't stick around.

They eliminate the dried mango, though, and they'll get one of my nasty letters.

4. Costco had these dried strawberries once
They were da bomb. They carried them for a few weeks, I was buying a couple of bags every time I went in. Then they disappeared, and have never been back. Probably for the best, since they were from China, but dayum they were good. Better than candy.

12. I *hate* that.
I will continue to add the lost item to my shopping list for months hoping that they will start stocking the item again.

2. Switzer's black licorice
Fresh & soft, it was SO good but it's gone now, think it was bought out by Hershey(?) who I guess didn't like the competition with their Twizler line. Twizler  Switzer

Alas, I guesss it's gone for good.

5. Speaking of Cadbury...
Are the Cream Eggs the same as they've always been? I remember devouring them when I was younger, but the last few years my wife will get me a few for Easter and they just aren't anything special anymore.

15. I had much more of a sweet tooth when I was a kid
and now the stuff I used to dream of eating 3 meals a day is nauseatingly sweet.

Now when I crave something sweet, it's bitter chocolate or yogurt. Dried fruit will also do.

16. I see this phenomenon most often when sheet cake is served.
When I was a kid? Gimme the damn corner piece with the BIG OL HONKIN' flower on it, dammit!

Now when I'm an adult? Um, middle piece, please no extra frosting, and sometimes I end up even scraping a bit off.

What happened? Part of it, I'll admit, is wanting to eat healthier but I don't think I could physically consume frosting like I used to without getting sick.

19. Oh yeah... Cake!
It's been totally ruined with the the pre-made mixes and the pre-made frostings they put on it and artificial flavors of the commercial bakeries, especially supermarket bakeries.

28. That's why everyone thinks I'm an amazing cook
I'm one of the bakers for our monthly birthday celebrations at work and the only one who doesn't use a boxed mix and pre made frosting. That's why it's good people, I used a recipe and no box! I also usually make something from Cook's Illustrated which isn't super sweet to cover for lack of other flavor and texture.

39. Ditto, lizerdbits.
I make homemade muffins and quick breads to take into work all the time and everyone loves it. I ate a muffin in our work dining room the other day (retirement center) and it was hideous! It was made from a mix and it couldn't have been more obvious. Just nasty.

People are amazed how wonderful things taste when they're homemade and it's not like it's THAT much more work. Sometimes it is but the results speak volumes!

36. It's not your tastebuds. The eggs HAVE changed. I also used to
look forward to them on Easter, but no more. They're grainier, don't flow correctly, and the taste is off.

6. Bounty candy bars. Like Mounds only better. I used to be
able to buy them anywhere. Now, the only place I've found them were in Canada and at the Vermont Country Store. I can't eat Mounds/Almond Joys because of the egg white. Bounty didn't have egg white in them, and the dark chocolate ones are divine.

7. Woody's is back!
Just found out my favorite barbecue sauce is back in production - Woody's Cook-in sauce. Looks like the brand was purchased by another company and they are keeping the original formula. I think I got the last four jars in captivity and I've been hoarding it for the last few months. The stuff was distributed by Reily Foods out of New Orleans (same company that makes Luzianne products) and they stopped making it sometime after Katrina.

Do you have a Super Target nearby? You could try checking there. I think that's where we got our current supply.

chocolate wafers a bunch of us were looking for:

http://www.hometownfavorites.com/products.asp?dept=1026&number=HFDE342&pagenumber=1

Also, I remember Bosco Chocolate Syrup for milk. Haven't see that one in a long time. And Brook's Tangy Ketchup. Now I just mix tabasco in with ketchup to get the same effect since I can't find Brook's here.

Cool site. Some of that stuff needs to be hard to find, tho. LOL Thanx! :hi:

26. Fresh whole milk
straight from the cow and unpasteurized. In most states it is illegal to buy it straight from the farmewr that milked it.

I grew up on that stuff and nothing else begins to compare. I've adapted to drinking skim milk but I really wish I could get real milk to prepare various dishes.

in the world for making WW pancakes if you didn't want to make them from scratch. 20 years ago in Montana, you could buy this all over the place. Went back east, could find it there, too. I haven't seen in in years. I see other Krusteaz stuff, but not that mix.
