One of life's great mysteries, Can someone tell me why it takes
2 scoops of grounds to make 3 cups of coffee after adding 8 measured cups of water to reach the 7 cup line in my 12 cup coffeemaker?

1. How old is your coffeemaker?
Sounds like time for a new one, maybe?

2. 7 'cup' of 6 oz each = 42 oz which is not quite 3 of the actual coffee mug most often used
of 16 oz size.

that being said, run some white vinegar through that bad boy and see if it helps

6. We use 4 scoops of coffee and fill to the 10 cup line to get 2 cups each (4 cups)

On a related note, I just learned about 2 months ago that there is an international standard coffee scoop size and has been for decades.

7. The mystery of the ages, but some research...
doesn't really help.

My crappy Mr. Coffee pot is 61 ounces at the 12 cup line-- why they would screw me out of 4 oz I don't understand. The scoop I salvaged from a Chock Full O' Nuts can years ago is 3 tablespoons and says 50 milliliters. I have other scoops of one and two tbsp.

I usually use 2 of those 3 tbsp scoops for one pot of "12 cup" coffee (which is really two of "my" cups) but some coffees require three.

One expert says:

http://www.viennacoffeecompany.com/t-faq.aspx

Use the right amount of coffee

We recommend using one (1) well-rounded (almost heaping) Tablespoon of ground coffee for each “cup” of water. This translates to just over ¾ measuring cup of ground coffee per “12 cup” pot-full. Note that the usual “12 cup pot” is only 64 fluid ounces (only about 5 1/3 ounces per “cup”). A standard coffee scoop is 2 tablespoons. Use 6 of those, heaping, for a 12 cup pot-full.

Start there and if it’s too strong, dilute the finished product with hot water. Don’t use less coffee! Even if you enjoy your coffee weaker, don’t use less coffee because that will cause the bitter components in the coffee grounds to be extracted too. Brew it strong and cut with hot water if you want the best tasting coffee!

8. You put this so well. I've noticed that for years, but couldn't find
a way to express it. Well Done!
