Chicken Noodle Soup Edition of What's For Supper. (9/9)
Woke up with a serious headache (sinus congestion), I am coughing and feel lousy in general. I am going back to bed and know that I am safe in saying I will be having chicken noodle soup all day long!!! I love that stuff when I am not feeling well.

I blame, rightly or not, my cold on not eating fresh food the last couple of days. My body has gotten so used to me eating TONS of fresh vegetables everyday and the last few days it has been processed/canned junk!

What will you be eating tonight?

1. Still up in the air. We'll go to the Farmer's Market...
...and see what looks good.

speculatively,
Bright

14. Update... 'the best-laid plans', etc....
Well, given the leisurely getting-up habits of our houseguest, we never did make it to the Farmer's Market this morning, and we went to Fiesta in the afternoon and walked and looked ourselves weary. So Himself "cooked" by getting takeout from the best Chinese in town-- Kung Pao Tofu, Green Beans with Chicken, and Sesame Dragon Shrimp, all with Jasmine rice.

Himself is a WONDERFUL cook, we all agreed. And there's leftovers for lunch tomorrow.

happily,
Bright

3. Going to the food co op to check out the fish
if it looks lousy, I'll probably defrost 3 or 4 prawns, butterfly them, marinate them in clarified butter and garlic, then put a light stuffing on top and bake them. I splurged on some fresh asparagus last week, so that will round it out.

If the fish looks good, it'll be grilled and served with the same asparagus and half a spud.

4. Burritos made with ground soy
It's the soy that's made like hamburger flavored for Mexican dishes. I'm heating it in the pan with a can of beans and some chopped tomato. Served with diced tomato and onion and some shredded non-fat cheese. It's low fat day around here.

16. Thanks, AZ.
I feel a small bit better today. I need to feel better by Tuesday since it is my birthday and we are going to our favorite restaurant to eat! I am getting as much rest as possible.

Hope you have a nice hot meal today.

10. Indian food--it's the last of the
September birthdays and the birthday girl decided it was time to visit our favorite Indian place--it'll be tandoori chicken tikka and coconut vegetable curry with garlic naan--but Mohamed already knows that--it's what we always order.
The cake will be tomorrow though--another Wellesley fudge cake--and I hope the dog doesn't get any this time.

11. Ooh, lucky dog. And the Indian food sounds yum!
I wish there were more ethnic restaurants around here. We went to Bennigan's for lunch.:eyes: But I had Irish food-a reuben!

12. The Indian restaurants here
have increased in number--and many are really good! We have been going crazy on Vietnamese food lately. There are a couple of places that we love--and for a quick meal, nothing better than pho. I like to get Ethiopian food every once in a while, but family members aren't so keen on it. What we don't have is great Mexican restaurants!

13. Now those we have. I LOVE Greek food and really miss
it here. There surely are more ethnic places downtown, but we don't get out much. Once DH leaves work in downtown on Friday, he doesn't want to go back. :(

18. The fudge cake sounds delightful.
Be careful with your doggy, just a little bit of chocolate can kill him. I am always preaching to my children to put up any chocolate they have since dogs seek out food like that to eat.

I hope you have the best birthday meal. It will be fun.

21. Dogs and chocolate
When I worked in an emergency vet clinic, we got more panicked calls about this than anything else (and MANY panicked visits with hysterial owners). Theobromine is the chemical in chocolate that is toxic to dogs. There is no need to panic if your large dog eats a Hershey bar (which is 1.55oz., just happen to have Dropkids fundraising candy right here :)). The following gives a good idea of how much is bad.

Chocolate - active ingredient = theobromine:

The half life in the dog is 17.5 hours
The Toxic dose in the dog is 100-150 mg/kg.
A kilogram (kg) = 2.2 lbs.
A milligram(mg) = 1/1000 of a gram
So for a 50 pound dog, a toxic dose would be roughly 2.2 grams (2200 mg) of pure chocolate.
However the concentration of theobromine varies with the formulation of the chocolate so:

Milk chocolate has 44mg/oz (154mg/100gm):
toxic dose for 50 lb dog - 50 oz of milk chocolate.

Semisweet chocolate has 150 mg/oz (528mg/100gm):
toxic dose for 50 lb dog - 15 oz of semisweet chocolate

Baking chocolate 390mg/oz (1365 mg/100gm):
toxic dose for 50 lb dog - 5 oz of baking chocolate

Most often the biggest problem you have if the dog gets into some chocolate (it's usually not a large amount) is diarrhea or sometimes vomiting at higher amounts. Don't freak if your Lab has eaten a Kiss. But watch for the following symptoms
toxic dose of chocolate from the symptoms. Within the first few hours:

vomiting
diarrhea
hyperactivity.

As time passes and there's increased absorption of the toxic substance, you'll see:
increase in the dog's heart rate (which can cause arrhythmia) showing up as

restlessness
hyperactivity
muscle twitching
increased urination
excessive panting.

This can lead to hyperthermia, muscle tremors, seizures, coma and even death in high toxic amounts.

It is always a good idea to keep chocolate out of the reach of dogs. My lab is a counter surfer, so all chocolate goes into cupboards, especially after she ate a whole box of nutty bars and had mild diarrhea for the rest of the day complete with pooped out plastic and cardboard  She IS a lab, so when I say she ate the box, I mean the WHOLE box (I just found scraps), but keep calm and don't panic. Call your vet and describe any symptoms, amount eaten, etc and they can advise you on what you should do.

23. Thanks so much!
Does that ratio apply to cats, too? Or are they susceptible to chocolate? I am constantly fighting away our little Siamese whenever I have chocolate (and yes, I realize that most cats don't have much of the sweet tasting ability) and while I don't want to share my chocolate with her (she doesn't work for it, after all) it would be nice to know that I don't have to clean my fingers before I fling her at the couch.

19. Karenca....
At least my sinus headache has gone away. I have been pour orange juice down my throat and really trying to fight it. I always go into the boy's school and do photocopies for teachers on Mondays. I need to feel well enough to do that.

You had quite the feast, did you make that yourself? Very nice.

Hopefully , tomorrow you'll be much better.
I had dinner out. It was very nice, but I couldn't finish, so I brought some home for
tomorrow.

The Seaweed/Cucumber Salad was exceptionally yummy.
