1. Lot's of things I remember...
Turkish taffy is something I had not thought of in a long time. We used to buy it all the time at lunch time.

I also had thought that Bosco had gone out of business. Much to my surprise I found it in a local, smaller supermarket. I have a bottle in my fridge! :-)

2. Jiffy pop
My officemate and I were talking about that the other day. She couldn't remember the name. She's younger than I am, so she probably only had fuzzy memories of it.

We always popped Jolly Time popcorn in a pot on the stove. A while back, I got a hankering for real popcorn. All I remembered was that it wasn't the same as microwave popcorn and it was good! Costco had a huge thing of Orville Redenbacher regular popcorn. It's great, with every few unpopped kernels.

3. Are you familiar with "The Huckabuck Family" by Carl Sandberg?
I loved that book and have given it as a gift to many kids.

4. That looks adorable
Us old folks can remember a time when Sandberg was Poet Laureate of the US. He used to routinely show up at state functions and read his poetry. That was under JFK.

5. Would this book be appropriate for 8 and 9 year olds?
It looks great; would my grandsons like it?

6. Yes, 8 or 9 is the perfect age.
They may need some help reading it the first few times. The prose is rather rich (Sandburg, what a surprise) but the premise that the farm is covered in popcorn is what tickled me as a kid as did the family names (Jonas Jonas Huckabuck, Pony Pony Huckabuck.)

9. I have seen Jiffy Pop but not in the same
form it used to come in. It used to come in an aluminum tray with a handle. You shook it over the stove until it popped. I have seen Jiffy Pop in those trays but these are made for microwaves I think. They look like plastic.

11. No, I can still get the oven kind
Metal handle, aluminum foil top and all.

Metal can't go in a microwave anyway.

I think they do sell a box brand of microwave popcorn, but this is the original-ish one (the top handle ends are edited out of this picture).

If your store carries them, they're usually hanging on the posts between the shelves.

Those are the ones I was referring to. They look like the ones I remember from my childhood but they are not made of aluminum..they are made of some kind of plastic. I will take a closer look next time but I am pretty sure I have not seen the aluminum ones in a few years.

13. No, it;'s aluminum, at least what I'm buying.
The colored logo top is just cardboard. Take it away, and you've got the same swirled flat dome-to-be of aluminum foil underneath.

Bad creamed corn (couldn't even stand the smell)

Peas in some indeterminable pea sauce

"vegetable medley"

Shephards Pie (gross!)

Tuna Tetrazzini (and it's not much better cousin, Turkey Tetrazzini)

15. I remember...
those gum rocks that came in a little drawstring bag. I saved the bags and put the foreign coins I used to collect in them. They're still there.
Chocolate Bonomo's Turkish Taffy, rock candy, Pillsbury frozen brownie dough which we used to slice for cookies (and to nibble on raw).
