Why oh Why Didn't I Try Chai?
We had a nice discussion in the Lounge yesterday about Chai teas. I wanted to repost it for the kind folks in this group and remember the recipes and brands so I can try them out.

I love chai! I use the Oregon Original Chai (in the carton, not a dry mix), which is also what Starbucks used when they first started selling chai (they no longer use that kind, not sure why). Trader Joe's sells it for significantly less than any of our local grocery stores, so that's where I get mine. I also like the Oregon brand kashmir green tea chai, which is a little less sweet, and has that nice herbal quality you get from green tea.

8. I love Chai!
We go to a restaurant that serves the bottomless cup of chai--and we can really put it away.
On the weekends I have sips from someone else's chai at Starbucks. I have to disagree with the others--I like the Tazo chai that S-bucks serves--especially in a latte. I don't care for other lattes, though.

It's not hard. It just a few spices like Cardamon, Cinnamon, Cloves, Tea, sugar and milk. Google Chai recipes. There are several you could try.


Chai is probably the generic name for tea. In Ethiopia tea is Shai (Sha ee), very similar to how the Arabs pronounce tea. Could the word tea be a westernization of Chai?

10. Celestial Seasonings and Stash teas
I drink Celestial Seasonings and Stash chai teas.

Stash has a green chai tea and also a double chai spice variety, both are good.

My "milk" of choice is Silk vanilla. When I don't have Silk, I use milk.

My favorite "chai" so to say is a seasonal Celestial Seasonings variety called Gingerbread Spice, available around Christmas/Chanukah. I hoard boxes right after the holiday so I can drink it almost year-round.

I don't add any sweetener to my chai, I let either the vanilla Silk or use the natural sweetness of the milk satisfy me.

13. I just made some with the vanilla soy milk
and some chai bags from the grocery store. Excellent! It was just sweet enough.

and I have a recipe from scratch if I'm feeling that motivated (google is your friend) in addition to the stuff in the carton. I get the Oregon chai mix when on sale.

12. I love Chai tea after dinner.....have tried several brands
but my favorite is my own mix of a teabag of good organic Darjeeling black tea with a teabag of a spice blend of cinnamon, kardamon and clove. Served with a little sugar or honey and some milk.
