Heaven is COSTCO!
OK, forget the huge sheepskin rugs I bought. I can only eat them with marinara sauce, anyway.

The matter here is persimmons.

For whatever reason, the markets I go to think persimmons are supposed to be soft and sell for $2 each.

Today, at Costco, a box of 9 rock-hard (the way I like 'em) persimmons, beautiful specimens, was $5.99.

I love Costco.

We're blessed w/mega Wal-Marts and Sam's Club. Not a Costco for miles, if at all in TX. x(
What do persimmons taste like anyway? I think my neighbor has a tree...

7. SoCalDem got it
Like the best Bosc pear in the world crossed with the sweetest apricot in the word.

I mean it - it's divine.

They're so good, I'll give you OLL dispensation to shop at Sam's if they have them.

They're that good.

4. I adore Costco
The last time I bought beef at Safeway -- Rancher's Reserve, no less -- I decided I'll buy all my beef at Costco. Plus, the price of butter is fantastic.

Unfortunately, I bought 8 pounds of Orville Redenbacher's old fashioned popcorn (the kind you cook in a pot on the stove) last time. I'll never finish it all, but I'm sure trying.

5. What do you do with persimmons?
Just eat them straight up or are they a cooking thing?

6. What SoCalDem said, and,
as it says on the side of the box, "Eat hard like apple."

I just cut them into chunks and try not to behave like a Hoover.

10. They are nice!
Sweet light taste, kinda like honey.

I was at Costco today and couldn't resist a box of these. Such a pretty color. I can never walk past the six red peppers for six dollars, either.

15. I got a trashbag full of fresh spinach greens for 4.50.
More than I need, but what I needed would have cost more at the grocery store. So I guess we will be doing the Popeye thing 'round here for the next few days.

14. Tell you what...........
In gratitude for what sounds like a terrific salad dressing recipe that you posted in response to my whine, I'll make you this offer:

If you ever find out that you're going to be near a Costco, I'll buy you a Gift Membership. Just let me know.

Deal?

Everyone deserves a Costco........

11. Hard persimmons?
My local grocery store carried hard ones and I decided not to buy them because I thought there was something wrong with them. Well, now that I heard some people actually prefer them rock hard, I'll know better and try them. At the grocery store by us, they're sometimes on sale for as little as 50 cents a piece.

12. They're supposed to be eaten hard,
like an apple.

Try one. You will be hooked, I guarantee it. When they're soft, they're fed to the pigs in China (sorry, H2S).

You'll love them.

16. Astringent vs. non-astringent
There's a difference between the two types. The non-astringent types (I believe they are mostly the flat ones) are lovely when they are still firm. The astringent varieties are supposedly really puckery until they are squishy-ripe. (I've only eaten the non-astringent varieties.)

I've made a nice fall salad in the past with mixed baby greens, sliced persimmons and pecans with a vinagrette dressing and a little blue cheese crumbled over the top.
