Lion doesn't recognize external drives - Thanks Steve!
Saturday morn, I cough up the $29.99 and download/install Lion. I then sit down and see what it's got.

I notice on the desktop that my external drive, a Seagate FreeAgent 1GB drive isn't displayed. I open Finder and it's not there. I reboot, still nothing. I go online and google it. It appears that this is an issue cropping up everywhere. When I do a System info, the drive is actually listed, so it knows it's there.

So in the meantime, I have over 600MB of files, documents, etc I can't access until they get off their asses and make the fix.

1. Check the manufacturers site.
I remember a few years back. I think it was 'Tiger,' so that was about 2005. Apple changed something about the data addressing and suddenly my two external 250 GB drives wouldn't mount. I contacted the manufacturer and they directed to a firmware update that I didn't know about. I applied it and then they mounted fine.

Additionally, is it set for NTFS? If so, see this thread:

2. It is NTFS, but a purchased a driver about a year and a half ago ...
from a third party that allows read/writes to NTFS. I bought it specifically so I could fully access Windows formatted drives. Been using it with Snow Leopard with no problems.

Just pissed that I have data I wanna access at some point and my primary home machine is "down".

3. Additionally...
I imagine you've thought of this, but is the drive in the sidebar of a finder window?

I just installed Lion this very hour and had forgot that the default is to not show drives on the desktop.

I mounted a drive and forgot for a moment.

4. No it's not, that's really when I first noticed it missing ...
I have a small USB hub with the drive and my printer. The printer works no problem and plugging the drive directly in gives the same result. Gonna have to wait - sent a tech request to Seagate about it.

Since this issue has been (hopefully) reported to Apple, they'll make a quick patch. Everything else is running great with no issues.

5. My externals, Hatachi, and Seagate work well with Lion.

6. Many problems I had were fixed by running Repair Permissions.
