So today I realized that my system was clogged with fonts. In my Font Book there was well over 200 fonts. Okay, I thought, I'll just disable them in Font Book and cull my list to an essential few.

Nope.

Both Pages and Word have this nasty habit of resurrecting disabled fonts. Since fonts are installed in many locations, rooting them out is time consuming at best, a pain in the ass normally.

Open a Finder window and type "fonts" into the spotlight window at the upper right. I had five separate locations for fonts. Most any Mac will have at least three. One is all system fonts. If you delete one, your Mac will die a painful death upon reboot . . . unless it doesn't. There were a series of Asian language fonts - I have NO ideas what language - that I deleted. You had to enter your password to delete them, but at least they got gone. Until they're not. Within a minute of deleting them, the OS sent me a message that one of them was a vital system file and had been restored to the folder.

After about two hours, which included about 30 minutes on the phone with AppleCare, I managed to pare my fonts down to a simple list of 22.

Now I have to do the same on my MacBook.

1. Back in the olden days....

I had the original Apple Mac box, which had a neat font called Techton or Technical, (can't remember exact name). Anyway, it looked like architectural/engineering hand printing. Loved it. Now it is not on my Mac, although ten thousand other useless ones are, and I can't find it. If I had it, I would use on all my email. Anybody know where I can find it????

2. I have a font called Technical, which is as you describe.

We used to use it to do our drawings. It was intended to look like skilled hand lettering. Now we just use Arial because that what our clients mostly mandate.

I also have a similar font called Tekton Pro

I don't know any way to display them here.

3. Did it come on your computer font collection originally?

Guess I just need to contact Apple and see how I can get it. Are you an architect?

4. I don't know where Tekton Pro came from. We bought Technical about 20 years ago.

It is an **ancient** true type font that we used with AutoCAD when it first started accepting Truetype. When we went to Macs we brought it over from the PCs.

Technical has since become public domain, as I understand it.

seriously, that should not slow down your mac. most designers have in the thousands. not that they use them, they just like to collect them.

i think font book is pretty useless myself. the macware font collections some with a nifty little font manager. i like their collections, too. full font families, with glyphs, and with good descriptive names. a disc or 2 should get you everything you really need.

i find fonts using the file extension in finder and drag them off.
