Will i-phone apps run on a Mac?
I'm thinking they're essentially the same as Widgets. Are they?

Can they run on my Mac?

1. Apple has an iphone simulator
iPhone SDK 3.1.2
With this software you can develop applications that run on iPhone and iPod touch. Includes the Xcode IDE, Instruments, iPhone simulator, frameworks and samples, compilers, Shark analysis tool, and more ... http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/development_tools/iphonesdk.html

2. Will that also allow me to use an app meant for the I-phone on my Mac?
Not develop one. Just use one?

3. After extensive googling, I think the answer is "No." Apparently the SDK allows
you to write Xcode projects and see how they would look on an iPhone, but there's another step required to turn tyhem into iPhone apps. The iPhone OS isn't OSX and I haven't located anything like a virtual machine for iPhone OS

4. Thanks for researching!
I had done the same thing and came to the same conclusion, but not for the technical reason you cite. I just didn't find anything that said you *could* do it.
