A fix for HP All in One Scanners It's not perfect, but it works.
Use Image Capture. It will automatically select what it will scan, so it might mung up some documents, but still it is better than nothing.

It works on my HP OfficeJet 5610.

Let me know how it works for you.

1. Try this:
Go to the Apple menu and click System Preferences
When the System Preferences window comes up, click the icon Print & Fax
On the Print & Fax window, click the tab Scan, then click Open Scanner
When the scanner opens, clicking Show Details gives you a self-explanatory menu
From there (at least for my HP 4400) things worked pretty much as I expected
