I need recommendations for a new isp (dialup)
Edited on Thu Jun-09-05 06:48 PM by SouthPasadenaDem
My new iMac just arrived yesterday. Until now, I've just been using WebTV at home (i.e. MSN)

Clearly, I shall need a new service provider (MSN tells me I can add a new computer to my current WebTV account, but I can't think of any particularly good reason to do so.)

Obviously, an accelerated (5x standard speed) dialup service is a priority, as is reliability; price is something of a consideration (although not necessarily the most important) and a blue-company/progressive rating of the company is a must. I'm not ready to go to DSL or cable quite yet (and have a DSL connection at the office anyway).

I was looking at Affordable Internet Services Online, Inc. (recommended by the Progressive Pages). But know nothing else about this company.

What does everyone here recommend? Awaiting your responses.

1. SBC Yahoo DSL is only $14.95 per month
for new customers who order online. I don't know what it's progressive rating is.

3. I had thought Yahoo-DSL might be the answer to my problem
but they do not support the current Mac OS 10.4 (I called to make sure; they were supposedly "working on" supporting 10.4, but they couldn't tell me when it would be available) which was a real disappointment - the price is definitely right at $14.95 a month!

Oh, well . . .

4. I'm using it on 10.4.1 right now
Whether or not they support it, it seems to work just fine.

5. Really?
Did you have it running on OS 10.3.X previous to updating to OS 10.4? Or did you start your service with a new computer with only 10.4 loaded in the machine?

I mean that $14.95-a-month deal would be too good to pass up if it does, in fact, work with my OS.

6. I had it running on 10.2.8
I just made the jump from10.2.8 directly to 10.4. I just hooked it up, transfered my settings and I was good to go. No problems.

A lot of times, applications will work just fine, but they won't be supported until the company has time to do adequate testing. They say that it's not supported just to cover their asses. It also means that they might not be able to give you tech support if you need it. To be honest, 10.4 isn't that different from 10.3 as far as settings and preferences are concerned. If they can help you with 10.3, they can help you with 10.4.
